One of Sonoma County's best kept secrets is Safari West wild animal preserve. Their tag line is "The Spirit Of Africa In The Heart Of Wine Country". This past Thursday, a new Masai Giraffe was born, just in time for the 2010 Census. The newborn calf's name is Stretch McCovey, named after a popular San Francisco Giants baseball player (521 home runs, 18 grand slams).
Wikipedia defines a Masai Giraffe as the larges subspecies of giraffe, and the tallest land mammal. These giraffes can be found in Kenya and Tanzania. Wikipedia needs to be updated, because they can also be found in Sonoma County's Wine Country at Safari West.
Mother (Jamala) and baby are doing fine ... Stretch was just over 6 feet tall at birth.
