Resurrecting Television News

Viewership of the network news broadcasts, both local and national/world, has been significantly decreasing over the years.

Possible Reasons Why

Many reasons have been given for this slow demise.

  • A popular opinion is that the news is biased, generally with a liberal slant, and hence does not provide the full picture of any given story.
  • Others believe that the news is all too often negative in content.  The positive stories are hardly ever addressed.
  • In recent times, even talk show host, Jay Leno, was being blamed for poor viewership.  Now that's getting desperate.

But, they could be able to save themselves from this apparently inevitable sad fate.

A Possible Solution

How?  An idea was mentioned by someone just the other day, perhaps in jest, but nonetheless it may have merit.

Implement into the news broadcast a laugh soundtrack.  Imagine this:

  • Iran's Ahmadinejad declares that his country is not implementing a nuclear weapons system and will let Russia refine its uranium for power plant purposes.
    • (ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha)
  • President Barack Obama declares jobs bill a bigger success than cash for clunkers program.
    • (ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha)
  • Two murders were committed on the upper east side this morning, but that leaves the murder total at 3 less than last year at this time.
    • (ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha)
  • For tomorrow's weather we can look for a clear sky, temperatures in the mid 70s, low humidity, and a mild wind.
    • (ha,ha, ha, ha, ha, ha)
  • In sports, the Boston Red Sox complete a 4 game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles.
    • (ha, ha, . . . That's not funny.)

What do you think?  It's been a main part of many a long running situational comedy.  Couldn't it work here too.

The reason that news is dead is that most people have already received the news before the news broadcast comes on.  There is plenty of data to support this, that is why most channels run reruns.  They are a dying breed.  Now your suggestion may have merit, I laugh at them anyway.

Dale,

That is true, that it is usually old news.  It amazes me how they tempt us throughout the evening with breaking stories that will air at eleven, only to find that it was a story from a day or two ago.

Ron,

This is an excellent idea.  I might even watch the news if they did this.

Ron,

The news is a serious business.

Ron,

As I understand it, the Fox News Channel has implemented the laugh track.  Well, at least, when I watch it I am rolling on the floor in laughter.
