How to Protect a Client's Financial Fingers from Getting Burned - Heed the Signs

It never ceases to amaze me that all of us at some point go about our lives and do not heed warnings or sage advice of experienced people around us.  We hope that at some point it "clicks," and we figure it out without having to experience pain and learn the hard way.

I believe our job as agents is to try to anticipate our clients' struggle to understand as they learn.  For example, a bank statement that says "1 of 6 pages" needs to be accompanied by all 6 pages, even the last one or two that look meaningless, for the client to have satisfied the requirement of providing a bank statement.

Hence in the words of another activerainer's 6-year old...

I woke up this morning, coffee in hand as I stumbled to the computer to get my morning dose of news.  As I'm browsing through MSNBC, I come across an article that left me dumbfounded.  (Well, not really, I've seen it before, and I'm sure we'll see it again!)

It seems a woman at the Wisconsin Zoo decided it would be a good idea to feed the bears.  The article stated:  "Police say a bear bit off a woman's fingers at a Wisconsin zoo after she ignored barriers and warning signs to try to feed the animal."

Bear Attack

At this point, I'm wondering "WTH are people thinking?"  "These warnings don't apply to me, just other people."  "Oh, they don't know what they're talking about, what a cute bear."  "Stupid Bear, I was just trying to feed him, why'd he bite me?! He should be killed!"  It's all the bears fault, I was only trying to feed him.

Well... DUH!  The barricades are up.  They've been told what to do - and NOT do.  Yet, they do it anyway despite all advice (and then blame the bear for the attack!).  The professionals do this for a living.  They aren't just flapping their lips to hear themselves talk.  They are trying to protect the general public.  It might be a good idea to listen to them!

Sound Familiar?

It got me to thinking about the real estate market.  Some sellers hire a REALTOR® for advice, but completely ignore anything we have to say.  They want to overprice their home (because it just takes that one special buyer who will be willing to over-pay by $200,000 for their special house).  They aren't willing to paint over the pepto-pink bedroom (because THEY like the color, so surely someone else will too).  They decline showings because they aren't convenient (surely our house is special enough that they will will be willing to come back later).  And then...they blame the agent because their house hasn't sold.

WELL... DUH!

If you're selling your house... Step away from the Bear's Cage!  Listen to the advice you've been given.  Don't make me come in there to rescue you!
