NASCAR NATION: Hot Tempers at Hot-Lanta

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Second Self Virtual Assistance

Sorry, NASCAR Nation.  I've been gone for a couple weeks.  Tons of stuff that's been going on in my personal and professional life that has kept me busy and away from social media.  But I'm back.  I haven't been missing my NASCAR (heaven forbid).  However, I have been unable to keep up with my NASCAR blogging.  That is being remedied right now!

There were some hot tempers at Hot-Lanta this weekend.  Between the tire issues that befell many drivers, the huge wreck that happened late in the race, super-duper fast speeds (sometimes in excess of 190mph) and the more bumpin' than draftin' going on between Brad Keselowski and Carl Edwards twice during the race, it was quite a thrilling ride for any NASCAR fan!  There were 11 cautions, two Green-White-Checker attempts and two cars dominating most of the day: the #9 of Kasey Kahne and the eventual winner, the #2 of Kurt Busch.

This video shows Brad hitting Carl at beginning of race, with a cut to Edwards being sent to the hauler after hitting Brad. Doesn't seem like Brad hit Carl on purpose. This actually looks like Carl's fault, too.

This video shows Carl's retaliation.

The biggest news of the day seemed to be a spat between the #12 of Brad Keselowski and #99 of Carl Edwards (see video above).  On Lap 40, Brad and Carl bumped into each other, which caused Carl to make a sharp right turn into poor Joey Logano's #20 Home Depot car.  This sent Carl to the garage for damages.  He didn't make it back out until he was approximately 100 laps down.  When he was interviewed after the wreck, he admitted that it didn't look like it was an intential hit by the #12.  Maybe the time in the garage gave Carl the opportunity to build this up and change his mind because with only 3 laps to go and Brad looking at a great top 10 finish, Carl (again, approximately 100 laps down) found himself behind Brad and decided to give him a nudge back.  Unfortunately, this not only sent Brad's car turning, but also gave him wings as his car was sent airborne, upside down and into the fence that, luckily, protected the fans from being squashed like bugs.  NASCAR immediately black-flagged Edwards and sent him to the trailers for a good "talking to".  In his interviews THIS time, Edwards all but said the words "I wrecked him on purpose."  He said that he didn't mean for Brad to be upended like that.  Did that mean he meant to spin the lead lap car and take him out of contention for a great finish?  Hmmm...

Because of the altercation between Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski, the first attempt at a Green-White-Checker finish brought the afternoon's only big wreck.  The cars seemed to accordian on each other on the restart (probably with someone spinning tires).  The #1 (Jamie McMurray), #5 (Mark Martin), #11 (Denny Hamlin), #18 (Kyle Busch), #33 (Clint Bowyer), #38 (David Gilliland) and #56 (Martin Truex Jr) all get caught up together.  The second attempt at Green-White-Checker brings about Kurt Busch's triumph.

NASCAR's Kurt Busch wins the Kobalt Tools 500 in Atlanta on March 7, 2010.Next week is a by-week, with the next Sprint Cup race scheduled for Sunday, March 21, 2010 on Fox at 1pm EST.

Top 5 Finishers of Kobalt Tools 500 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway are:

1. Kurt Busch #2
2. Matt Kenseth #17
3. Juan Pablo Montoya #42
4. Kasey Kahne #9
5. Paul Menard #98

I'll see you then, folks!  Boogity, boogity, boogity!

Good morning Heather,

I am not a NASCAR fan, but every news story about NASCAR reminds me of you & your love of the sport.  So you have been on mind a lot lately since the season is just beginning.  Have you seen Zane lately?  He is another NASCAR fan who only lives about 45 miles west of me.

Thanks, Mary.  And, no, I have not seen Zane around in a while.  I know he kind of dropped off the radar a few months ago, too, because of stuff going on off-line.  Then he was back.  But, he hasn't been on in a while.  I'm going to have to email him to make sure he's OK.  Thanks for the reminder.

Boogity, Boogity, Boogity! Oh yeah, if you are going to leave it to the drivers, which I like - this is what you are going to get. Keselowski wrecks everyone else. Hamlin got his payback and now it was Edwards turn. Who cares about this race - it was Talladega where Keselowski flipped Edwards - so payback is a bitch!

I thought it was Talladega, Jason.  I'm worried about the participants, though.  That fence will only hold back so much.  You can still get injured from flying debris.  As for Talladega, though, Brad was holding his ground and racing Edwards when he got flipped.  I don't think it was Brad's fault.  It was racing.  That was as much Carl's fault as Brad's.  Just like the first bump between Carl and Brad at the beginning on yesterday's race.  If Carl had turned Brad because they were racing for position, that would be one thing.  To turn him for no reason other than to be a little brat, that's uncalled for.  I still love the racing, though.

Carl is in big trouble now, and should be. It will be interesting to see what Nascar gives him tomorrow. It wouldn't suprise me to see them park him for one or several races. He has created bad blood with a number of other drivers over the years, so this isn't the first time. I'll bet Jack is steaming at him for that blatent act, as he could have killed someone. In our group, we track drivers who have a bad reputation with other drivers. Usually drivers get a reputation for wrecking other drivers because they lack talent and some just plain don't care. In 2009 we voted for the top "wreck creating" drivers were: Truck series--Matt Crafton, Nationwide series--Brad Keselowski and in Sprint-- Denny Hamlin.

What group re you in, Gerry?  I'm not opposed to the bump drafting.  Makes for interesting racing.  But, this wasn't "bump-drafting".  It was just unsportsmanlike behavior.  My friends and I always talk about JPM and how he likes to wreck people.  Doesn't seem to be an issue this year.  But, for the last couple of years, Juan Pablo always seemed to drive too aggressively, too quickly and wrecked too many people.  I always hated him coming around my drivers.

Keselowski does a nice interview , but he does take people out on the track !!! I wonder what the # 3 car would have done to him ??????????

The same thing Edwards did I would guess, Michael.  He was the king of bump-drafting, right?  He was one of the most aggressive drivers when he was alive from what I know.  I didn't start watching NASCAR until the year after he died.

Heather, We have a group who we watch and go to the races with. We park in the motor home lot and have easy access to the track.

It was interesting to watch Jimmy Spencer's show last nite "Whats the deal". Jimmy dosen't think that Nascar should give Carl any fines or suspension. He makes a very good point and read exactly what Nascar told the drivers at the beginning of the year. If you look at this from that perspective, It looks to me like they have painted themselves into a corner and have no way out of the room.

I think that this incedent will be the talk of Nascar for months to come regardless of what the penality is. If you watched the Monday nite shows, you saw various commentators tearing into Brad, Denny, Jaun, Elliott and a few others for past actions on the track. A few (like Jr) getting fines for saying "shit" in interviews.

Now Nascar will have to draw some very fine lines for the drivers to follow. Wow, thats going to be A VERY LARGE BOOK. I always tape all the Speed and ESPN Nascar shows and watch them when I get home from the office at Night. Tonight should be interesting. See you tomorrow!

Well, with other drivers getting fined and penalized points in years past, Gerry, I think the 3 race "probation" is a load of crap!  It's tantamount to a slap on the wrist for not only putting another driver's life at risk on purpose, but also creating a possible issue with spectator safety.  This was not racing.  This was poor sportsmanship and unnecessary.

Wow, that was a scary bump. I saw this on the news, and intentionally wrecking someone like that is totally uncalled for, especially when an airborne car like that could have had tragic consequences !

Yikes !!!!

Welcome back Heather!!!!  NASCAR letting drivers and car owners work out the issue is a good idea * Jack Roush needs to give Roger Penske a race car * Carl should loose points if it happens again.....I'm not sure I like the bye-week this week - it should come later in the season although Bristol will be cold in 2 weeks anyway!!!

Well, after watching all the shows last night, I guess I have a different opinion now than I did yesterday.

Marty Smith who is a reporter for ESPN was on “NASCAR NOW” was on yesterday. He seemed almost giddy about the conversations he had with various drivers and others in the shops. According to him: The other drivers agreed that if that car didn’t go airborne there would have been a totally different atmosphere after the race. According to one ‘high profile’ driver who didn’t want to be identified, “The only hits that would have been happening after the race, would have been the other drivers and crew member’s high fiving Carl for what he did.

Apparently, Brad has made a lot more enemies among the drivers than even we thought. Earlier in this post I wrote what drivers we thought were the worst wreckers in the sport and we choose Brad for the NW series. Looks like we were right on that one.

The drivers that I really wanted to hear from are Jeff Burton and Mark Martin. They are usually the voices of reason on all things NASCAR. They have the reputation as the cleanest drivers on the track and taking responsibility if they do make a mistake that hurts someone else. Maybe we will hear what they have to say before Bristol.

Something really spectacular has to happen in NASCAR for it to garner more than a mention on the 5:00 news, Sheldon.  And, yes, I think it was very scary.

Hey, Wallace.  Good to see you, too.  I was more disappointed in the tantrum Carl seemed to throw by wrecking Brad when Carl was 150 laps down.  The car taking flight just made it scarier.  I don't mind when drivers bump the car in front of them to get them out of the way if you have no way around them and they are too slow.  That's the "rubbin' is racin'" philosophy to me.  But, the intentionally wrecking a car is uncalled for.  And I've seen it with lots of drivers, including my very own beloved Jeff Gordon.  Letting drivers settle it via fisticuffs in the garage is fine with me.  Keep it off the track.  Other drivers and fans don't need to be caught up in the aftermath.

I'm not a Brad Keselowski fan.  But, the wreck last year at Talladega and the bump earlier in the Atlanta race didn't appear to me to be Brad's fault.  It looked like racing.  At Talladega, Brad and Carl were racing for position.  Brad tried to go around Carl, Carl went to block him.  That's when Carl went flying.  I don't see that as Brad's fault.  They were both racing.  Carl tried to block him.  He didn't succeed.  That's what happens.

See the video here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9FsYDEIZWk

And, if you watch the video of the initial issue at Atlanta in my blog above carefully, you'll see that Carl actually moves down in front on Brad and gets turned again.  But only because it looked like Carl had misjudged how much room he had.  Brad never moves.

Again, I'm not a Brad fan.  I think he is an incredibly aggressive driver.  But so was Dale Earnhardt Sr. and people seemed to love him.

Mark Martin IS the consummate gentleman, Gerry.  I think Juan Pablo Montoya has been an incredibly aggressive driver as well as Kyle Busch.  Although both of these guys have simmered down a little bit this year it seems.  JPM always makes me nervous because he's bound to wreck somebody.  I think NASCAR needs to have some consistency, though.  I watched Inside NASCAR on Showtime last night and listened to them speak to Mike Helton.  Helton seemed to give himself a big pat on the back because they parked Carl "for the rest of the race".  That's not a big deal when you realize that Carl was already 150 laps down and caused the wreck 3 laps from the end.  It didn't change anything.  He should have, at the very least, had some points deducted.  And, as Michael Waltrip said, "not make it so obvious" he simply went out to wreck Brad.  Brad's no angel.  And his day will come, I'm sure.  Especially if he keeps turning people.
