Before relocating to central North Carolina almost eight years ago our family spent what we consider to be one of the most memorable times of our lives in "Americas' Paradise" the U.S. Virgin Islands. We had the good fortune of spending 3 years on the lovely island of St. Croix and then an additional 3 years on its beautiful sister island of St. Thomas.
Unfortunately, as some say, all good things must come to an end so when the time came to move back to the mainland, my wife and I had much to think about as we contemplated where we'd like to take our family next. We considered going back to Maryland where we both grew up and where our children were born. We considered Florida as we'd become accustomed to the tropical climate of the islands and Florida seemed to be a desirable alternative, but ultimately we chose Central North Carolina due to its historically mild climate, good schools, friendly residents and its growing, thriving local economy.
I mentioned our "historically" mild climate as one of the considerations for relocating to the Raleigh-Durham, Chapel Hill area but like much of the east coast we've seen record low temperatures during this past winter season. Fortunately though, central North Carolina dodged the record snow fall that fell in many of our neighboring states and cities. As we head towards spring, forecasters have predicted temperatures in the mid to upper 60's this week, bright sunny days and a return to the weather patterns we've come to enjoy and expect in the Triangle.
I must admit, I'm excited to welcome spring back and to throw off my heavy outer wear. I can't wait to break out my short sleeve shirts, flip flops and Bermuda shorts. Next weekend we'll adjust our clocks ahead an hour and our daylight hours will extend beyond 8:00 p.m. in the evening. Oh what a glorious time of the year in the Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Durham area.
