Have you ever seen an "I Love Lucy " episode?  How much trouble that witty, talented lady could get into.  Thank God she never quit. Most of us got our licenses for a variety of reasons, but to my knowledge none of us felt we should give it back. Sure some people lost theirs for different reasons, but giving it Back?

I was reading Lenn Harley's post on ARE YOU A SECRET AGENT? RUMINATING ABOUT AGENT TO AGENT REFERRALS , then after a 22 hour day I left my phone on the sidewalk outside my office :(   Driving back from the middle of nowhere this morning  to pick up my phone, I remembered her post and decided  darn I better give my license back.

driving from one office to another

The Top 5 reasons for giving your license back are:

1.  Losing or dropping your cell phone into any type of water: Let's see....I have dropped it in the lake, a portapot in the desert, and have gotten it wet by the sprinklers.  And last night after driving 3 hours from one office to another-I left it lying on the sidewalk outside the office, along with a bottle of water.

So, Lenn, I guess I won't be getting anyones referrals :) but should I quit?

2.  Spending too much time with clients to help them meet their needs.; One of the comments on Lenn's blog was from an Agent that stated they don't answer the phone if they are with clients, or on the other line as she is meeting the needs of the current person. Boy, am I guilty of this. I think when a client calls, or we call them, that they deserve our full attention. If we are full service, then we need to give every client full service first, and the prospects second...... Can you imagine saying:

Sorry Joe, but I can't help you right now...someone I don't know is calling?  Or even better, Joe called and you have an appointment to list his home.....He's showing you his home and you hurry him along because he is taking too much time.....what if a listing call comes in? What type of message does this give the person whose home you're in? And doesn't Joe deserve the time he needs for this important decision?  Guess I better quit....

3.  Using the computer for more than playing solitaire....Some agents don't know how to use the Computer, and are afraid to try. I had to hire a high school kid to teach me in the beginning, but I learned, and am learning daily:  this takes time and commitment. Sure it can be overwhelming spending hours blogging, Marketing, and learning new things here, or on one of the millions of sites out there. But we are the winners, and so are our clients, both current and future.  We can help them meet their needs if we learn the new tools available for Real Estate in the 21st Century......

4.  Driving too much and adding to the Greenhouse effect...With gas around $3 a gallon, we spend a lot of money on gas these days, and probably add to the greenhouse effect. Clients are not just in our backyards....they have properties anywhere in the 50 states, and for some of us, overseas as well.  I just haven't figured out how to help them meet their needs by saying, sorry I can't drive that far... I have to fill my tank, and well, you know about the global warming!  Guess we could tell them that Industries and cows give off more gases than our car :) Guess we can only have clients within walking distance.....

Again, Guess I better quit, as I drive to where I'm needed.

5.  Having a family, and/or a pet. Now this is a big one for all of us. My Grandchildren expect me at their birthdays, or plays at school; maybe even a little league game or 2.  My children call and take up my time telling me they love me, and what they are doing in their adult lives.  Heck, I have even been know to call my 76 year old mother to make sure she is well, and let her tell me whatever is happening in her life that day.

And to complicate my availability I have a dog........poor guy thinks I should play with him every now and again, and EVERY DAY he thinks he should get fed, petted, and for me to give him fresh water.  he also likes to be let into the house to escape the 100 plus weather we have.

I just don't know how we can meet everyones needs with these 5 things taking up our valuable time .....Should we give our licenses back.......

I'll bet that our clients have lives too.....think about how many times one of the above 5, Life itself, has occured anytime in your Real Estate Career.  I won't give my license back, and nor should any of us.....

Life is full of ups and downs, we just do the best we can with what we have.......

I'm not a big fan of having anyone give their license back, but I do think that it should be harder for people to get!

Right on, Kathy!  And how DARE you take time out to call your mother?  Sheesh, and you call yourself a realtor?  hee hee hee (Still laughing picturing Lucy on the candy packaging line stuffing chocolates into her mouth!) -- Lisa/Luxury Fractional Guide

Bob- I don't think anyone does give back their license, although some might have thought about it before losing it....CAR publishes a list of people that have been suspended, or revoked.....to me maybe they shouldn't have gotten it in the first place.  yes, you're right it should be harder to get.

Lisa-Thanks for visiting, and heck I even dared to fulfill her 75th birthday wish last year and took her to Europe for a month.  Only mother I have, so might as well make the best of it :)  That Lucy segment was hilarious.  Tonight she was a bullfighter :)

A bit of lighthearted humor and sarcasm. I like it! Guess I had better give mine back too! HAH. No way to be all business 24/7 even if we try. And you know what? We shouldn't be 24/7, but we should be PURE QUALITY when we ARE working to serve our clients best.  As far as family goes, they always come first. Bad me. ;) Thanks for the laugh and reality check.

What...you don't answer your phone when out with clients?  Geez, and you call yourself an agent!  I did laugh when I read that.  One day two weeks ago I counted how many calls I got in the hour and a half I spent with a client...55...and like if I took them I could have spent any time with the client at all.  I'm sorry I can't help you. My phone is calling me!!!

I am not a fan of anyone giving there license back either.  But I do believe when we are in a meeting with someone, you should turn off your phone or put it on silence, how many times have you been sitting and talking to someone about an important matter and they take a phone call, if I know that I am waiting on a call that is important and I must take it, I let who ever I am with know that I am waiting on a call so please forgive me if I have to take a call it is just out of respect and everyone deserves it and I promptly return all my calls.

PS, you sound like a hard at work Realtor!

Wendy- you stated: "but we should be PURE QUALITY when we ARE working to serve our clients best."  Couldn't have said it better myself :) I had a long drive this morning, and this popped into my head.

Thanks Lenn and TRW for putting my brain in a different direction :)  It entertained me this morning on my LONG........drive to pick up my phone.

Chris- you said,"  One day two weeks ago I counted how many calls I got in the hour and a half I spent with a client...55..."    55....no I doubt your client would have been very happy with you on the phone that much.....I remember those days :) Clients do deserve our respect....

Lorinda-you said it perfectly; it's about respect.  People might be impatient trying to get hold of us, but again we do the best we can.  Oh, and yes, I try to not only work hard, but work honest........

I like your style!  If I miss a referral because I pay attention to my clients, I don't need that pushy buyer, or their agent, who have no respect for my time.  Besides... if you are supposed to answer the phone no matter what, well, there are times people answer I wish they would NOT!

Debbie- thank you......and being from Alaska, aren't there areas there that don't have cell service?  i am very close to Palm Springs but we have several areas (see picture) where there is no service at all.  Most of my clients and the vendors understand.  Yep, clients first.....

I totally agree that when you are with a current client they deserve 100% attention. I have been on the other end where someone I am with takes a call (or several calls) and it can make you feel unimportant. Is that how your client wants to feel? I think not.

I bet if you had answered that phone, you wouldn't have left it on the sidewalk, HAHAHA!!!  OK, just kidding.  Balance is always something I struggle with because our clients (mostly Realtors) expect us to be there for them 24/7.  You have such a great outlook!

Melissa- I think not too......and how about this one......you're on the phone and the other person gets a call coming in and they say Oh I have to go I have another call?  So, you are hanging up on me to get another call?  Ouch to the clients.

Beth-

OK next time I will hold the Treo ( no small item) up to my ear with my shoulder, hold the jug of water in my left hand, cuz I'm right handed, and try to put the key in the lock with my right hand........yep, I will try that next time......guess I just have too many gray hairs....that's my excuse anyway.

Kathy, all your points regarding (giving your license back) are interesting, and all the comments from others too.  As busy as we all are for whatever reason, if a call is missed nobody can be accessible 24/7 and I believe that most of our clients understand and accept this.  Yes, time is always of the essence, and even if you return their call the next day, well thats better than not returning a call at all.   Then by choosing carefully what is said to the client is most important.  Hard work, honesty, integrity  and doing the best job you can do is always the bottom line.   I think I will hold on and not give my license back just yet.   Good luck to all.
