As the March 14 2010 change to daylight saving time nears, all fire officials urging people to use the twice-a-year event as a reminder to install fresh batteries in their home smoke alarms.

Working smoke detectors can decrease the risk of dying in a home by nearly 50 percent by providing an early warning and critical extra seconds to escape.
