Goodbye My Furry Friend

By
Real Estate Agent with Rocky Mountain Homescapes, Keller Williams, Denver Colorado

I knew it was almost time throughout the winter and then last weekend we needed to take Bailey, my golden retriever, to the vet. She was really struggling with her bad hips. Some pills and steroids and she was back up walking with that wagging tail of hers.

BaileyBailey was with us from the time I first saw her at the Aurora Animal Shelter over twelve years ago. She was our dog. The animal control folks had picked her up and no one ever came to claim her. Lucky for us and a terrible mistake for them. When I had to move in with friends while my house was being built, Bailey and our yellow lab, Courtney Love, headed up to the mountains to stay at doggie camp. Bailey was the dog they introduced to new dogs who had never been there before. She loved everyone and especially every dog.

While Courtney is fast and focused, Bailey was a roamer that took her time making sure she didn't miss any detail. She was the welcome wagon at the front door. She would have been the first one to meet and greet any bad guys breaking in. It just wasn't in her nature to be mean. She hated the camera, so I don't have any good photos, but this one looks just like her.

Today was finally the day. She must have had some kind of stroke this afternoon because she could no longer get up and her eyes were a little unfocused. My son and I put her in the car and took her to the Alameda East Veterinary Clinic. Thank goodness for the professionals that work around the clock to help us and our animals in a time of need. They were kind and understanding. I stayed with Bailey and we were outside as they put her to sleep.

It was time for my funny, loving, happy girl to be released from her pain. Goodbye my furry friend, I love you and I will miss you.

Rebecca, I am so sorry. It is so difficult when we know they are looking at us to help them and there is nothing we can do but hold them and tell them it is going to be okay. I'm glad that you were there for Kiki and I could be there for Bailey. One thing is for sure, they knew we were there for them and that we loved them. We both did all we could to save their lives, but time and health issues were just too much. I have been looking through some of the old photos and they make me laugh and cry. Weren't we lucky to have them? I know Bailey enriched my life and I know Kiki did yours as well.

Jennifer,

I am so sorry for your loss. I'm sure Bailey leaves with you over 12 years of great memories.  Golden retrievers are good dogs.  I've had my chiwauwau "SCOUT" for almost 3 years now and couldn't imagine my life without her.  You said you saw it coming and I'm sure were mentally preparing, but it still has just got to be a void there right now.  So, my thoughts go out to you!

Thank you Stacey. Our pets have such amazing personalitities that sometimes you can just look in there eyes and know what they are thinking. They also seem to know just when you need a friend. There is a void in the house, but I'm also remembering what great fun we had over the years. She had such a fun sense of humor and would prance when we walked by other people and other dogs. Bailey was truly amazing and I'm sure Scout is too.

Nothing warms the heart like a golden retr. Ours too is a rescue and the absolute sweetest boy. He is 12, a little stiff at times but healthy.

Jennifer- Your heart will mend, with time. Your memories are now forever in writing... She was a very lucky dog to have you as his loving family. Destiny is something awesome isnt it!

Michele- Those goldens grab you from the start. Destiny is awesome. Thank you for your kind words. While it will take some time, I know there is another future family member out there waiting for a good home and the door will be open.

Jennifer,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss.  I know the feeling and it's horrible.  Just know that as Bailey crossed that Rainbow Bridge that she was greeted by many friends and was no longer in pain.

I adopted an abused stray some years back.  The vet said at the time that she was probably 4-5 yrs old.  I had to let her go a couple years ago and it broke my heart.  She was certainly a special girl, as was Bailey.

I'll say a prayer for her - and for you and yours.  Your hearts are big enough to make another rescue dog feel love and acceptance.

Carol- We are truly blessed to have such great companions. Bailey was always there just waiting for me to come home and play with her. Courtney, my yellow lab, is still here. She is sad too, but we are working through it together. I know Bailey is much happier now and the day will come when we will be reunited. There will be a number of dogs and cats just waiting. It will be truly amazing. Those strays are the best kind! I hope that you have found a new friend to share your life.

Jennifer, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I'm like you in that I am totally in love with my dog. My last one before I got Chanel died after being hit by a car. It took me 10 years to finally get another one. I'm glad the right one found me.

Lizette- I can't imagine the pain of having Chanel die after being hit by a car. I knew Bailey was old and struggling, so her death, while painful, was not unexpected. I'm glad that you found a great family member and your pet is lucky to have you.

Jennifer - My thoughts and prayers are with you. It amazes me how much love these silly animals can give us when they don't necessarly talk or hug, etc.  But they truly do find a way to let us know how much they loved us.

My baby Casanova said good-bye yesterday and the pain is horrible but I trust he is running and playing today, just not with me.

Kelly, I'm so sorry to hear about Casanova. It is painful and I still look around for Bailey even though it has been a few weeks. They make us giggle and help us see that all is right in the world even when everything seems to be in chaos. I do believe they are in a wonderful place, pain free and surrounded by lots of pals. You, too, are in my thoughts and prayers.

Jennifer, so sorry to hear of your loss of a sweet friend.  I'm sure she was a source of many smiles and much laughter.   There is nothing that destresses a day like smiling golden.  A great dog and companion is positively a blessing.

We recently just 3 months ago had to put our golden down.  The picture of Bailey made me think of our Abby.  They were very similar in color.  She too was great friend. She was almost 14.  I said to my husband, "she'd be a freshman in high school if she were human", which sometimes it seemed she was very close.  We are adjusting as I am sure you are.  Sincere sympathies from old golden retriever mom to another.

Jan, I still think of Bailey every day just as I'm sure you think of Abby. They don't live enough years for all the joy they bring. I'll never forget her and the next dog I get will be in honor of her memory. Hang in there!

Terry- I still miss her and occasionally wait for her to come around the corner. I stopped by the animal shelter in the last few weeks, but it just isn't the right time yet. Thank you for the website. Several AR friends have sent it to me and it is very comforting.

Jennifer,

She is oh so sweet and I know its been a while now ( I just caught up and saw the post) but how are you doing?  Did you decide to get a new pup or wait a while.

It is so hard when they leave us.  I totally understand.

Best wishes,  Karen

Karen- I still miss her everyday, but we do have a new addition to the family as of about a month ago.

Olive is a four month old English Pointer mix and she is joining our 12-13 year old yellow lab, Courtney. Olive has been a wonderful addition to the family and has brought laughter and play back into the house.

Thanks for thinking of me and my family!!
