I GOT THE "VIBE" BUT CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE I GOT IT

Rerecently I read a blog post about homes giving off a "VIBE". ( Sorry to say I did not bookmark, so if anyone knows where I saw it or who wrote it please let me know, it was full of great information ) I was so impressed, as I have been trying to come up with this for a couple of years now. The main "VIBE" that I seem to run into a lot is "an older person lives or lived here". Actually, the first home that I did a "Walk Thru" with a Realtor. I said walking up to the front door, an older person lived here, right ? She was amazed that I said that, even more so that I was correct.

The front door had two side windows, the windows had lace sheers covering the small glass inserts. What a dead give-a-way, that someone older lived there. Last week, I did a "Walk Thru" and hanging over every window, that even had beautiful wooden blinds covering them..was..you guessed it lace sheers. My report ?

Take down the lace sheers.

In the same house last week, even if they had tried to trick me by taking down the lace sheers, there were small collections of figurines everywhere...dusty, small and just said to anyone..yes an older person lives here.

Collections of things, old lace curtains, etc are signs that an older person lives there or has lived there and need to be removed and brought up to date.

What are your experiences with "VIBES" that houses have ?

OMG!  Looking at these photos of fussy collections makes me want to runaway screaming and never come back!  What a challenge.

I know exactly what you mean, and in this part of the country it runs rampant!!  Especially the lace!  Removing it is always my first suggestion, and what a difference it makes in any space.  Once people put away their collections, they are surprised at how much easier it is to dust and clean, and that they really don't miss them at all.  I believe they just need someone to tell them--"GET RID OF IT!!"  Great post!

Ahhh, yes. The old lace curtains. And you forgot the little lace doilies under each of those lovely figurines. Amazing what removing them can do to update a space!

Great post.  Buyers do get a feeling when they first enter a home.  The feeling they get when they see all of the owners stuff is "get me out of here!!!"

I have been amazed of just how many homes that I have gone into since I started staging that have not only one collection of things but several...

Hi Mary Lou ~ I guess it boils down to to each their own.  I love vintage stuff and of course antiques and every house I've bought was an older person's house.  I'd take it any day over the I'm-young-and-the-only-stores-I-know-about-are-Pottery-Barn-and-West-Elm.  Can't take it!! All the same! Drives me nuts.

I'm lucky in that I live in an area with really amazing houses and equally amazing occupants.  We see the most wonderful things on tour - mementos, art, antiques, books, ephemera etc. And then all the PB&WE&IKEA young people's condos.  Oh well. Everyone's taste changes over the years.  I often wonder if decades from now those same condo owners will look back and chuckle at their early decorating forays the way my mother does about her first place.

One thing I was initially surprised by is that even if you have the most amazing art or antique collection - beautifully displayed - if there's too much people will tend to spend their time and energy ogling your stuff instead of your house.  So even if beautiful it has to be pared down.
