Tim Hortons Scores Big With Sid The Kid Commercial

By

I'm sure when this Tim Hortons coffee commercial was filmed prior to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, there was no notion that Sidney Crosby would become a National hero for scoring the winning goal for Canada's Olympic men's hockey team.  That overtime goal against an outstanding U.S. team resulted in an Olympic gold medal for Canada.

But perhaps the advertising/marketing team that put this commercial together for the Canadian coffee giant had vision.  You take a product, in this case young hockey phenom Crosby, match it up with another successful product, Tim Hortons coffee, of course and you get win, win right?

Tim Hortons have always sponsored sports teams for youngsters and not just hockey.  My daughter was a soccer "timbit" in her first couple of years on the field.  Road hockey is almost a national 4 season sport itself.  A great way for  drivers to learn patience on the road is to just slow down and smile at the kids as they (sometimes slowly) move the net over to the side of the road to allow you to pass.

Jenny,

That was "lucky" foresight on Tim Hortons part.

Hi Malcolm, and he seems so sensible.  Thank goodness the money and fame hasn't gone to his head.

Hi Terry - They had great insight.

Hi Barrie - I think it was really well put together also.  I was actually looking for the new one and stumbled across it.

Hi Nick - Such great talent.  It is a sport where your career could be over in an instant so he is collecting all his awards now.

Jenny, obviously Tim Horton saw something special in Crosby so the gamble wasn't all that big. The hockey final just pushed it over the top.

Jenny:  What a wonderful commercial... although I really wouldn't call this a "commercial."  Hockey is a symbol of togetherness, and one-ness of spirit.  That is so very easy to see.  Thanks for sharing...

PS... Did YOU ever play any hockey ?

Hi Liz - Great question.  Now what kind of commercial could Starbucks do to attract business.  Different target market definitely.  Do Starbucks patrons watch hockey?  Time for a survey.

Hi Ed, seeing Crosby has won just about every hockey trophy possible at such a young age, I guess he was a great "go to" guy.  Also seeing hiim wearing a Timbit hockey sweater as a kid helped.

Hi Karen Anne - No I didn't play hockey but my boys did.  I must say I spent 10 years in rinks and missed it when they finished playing.  My 25 year old still plays a couple nights a week and also coaches a 10 year old rep team but I don't get the urge to sit in the arena anymore lol.
