What makes Texas unique? Some fun facts!

Since moving to Texas in June 2004, I've noticed that Texans have a sense of PRIDE. I have bought into this pride as well. It's easy to do!

Recently I looked up What Makes Texas Unique and found some very interesting tidbits of information that I thought I would share.

Texas is the only state to have the flags of 6 different nations fly over it - Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and the United States.

Texas was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845.

Texas is the only state to enter the United States by treaty instead of territorial annexation.

By treaty, the Texas flag is the only state flag that flies at the same height as the United States flag.

The capitol in Austin opened May 16, 1888. The dome of the building stands sever feet higher than that of the nation's Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The King Ranch in Texas is bigger than the state of Rhode Island.

The first word spoken from the moon on July 20, 1969 was Houston. (the rest of the sentence is not so flattering, but that's not the point of this post)

El Paso is closer to Needles, California than it is to Dallas.

And my FAVORITE fact... On March 27, 1984, the temperature in Brownsville was 106 degrees while Amarillo reported snow and 35 degrees.

Everything is bigger in Texas!

Those were some really cool facts. I saw just about the whole world while I was in the Marine Corps but I have never been to Texas. It's got an incredible history and one of these days I'm going to visit on vacation. Good post.

Speaking of everything's bigger in Texas...With more than 267,000 square miles, Texas is as large as all of New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois combined.

Thanks for the FUN Facts John!

John, They are fun facts.  The only one that is in disput is the Texas flag flying at the same level as the US flag.  I was called on this and according to Snopes it is not true.

My older brother lived in Texas for 25 years. It was his adopted home and he spent the last 17 in Austin. Texas is a great place.

Michelle - These were only  few fun facts. :-)

Marchel - I did read the slopes article... and I think they are wrong. I don't know why I think its wrong, except for the fact that its a fun fact. I have no real proof except for 'word of mouth'. Thanks for sharing the article.

Dawn - It is my job to educate where needed.

Phil - I've enjoyed it and wish we would have moved here years before. I've been to Austin, but only for a short visit. Actually headed there tomorrow for the day. I'd like to visit Houston too.

El Paso is closer to Southern California than it is to the East Coast of Texas while Texarkana (on the border with Arkansas) is closer to Chicago than it is to the South Texas border. It is about 800 miles E. To W. if you have to drive across Texas and about the same distance from North to South. You could put all of New England and New York State into Texas and still have a lot of room left over.

Kind of puts things in perspective when you talk about the size of Texas.
