Advice For First Time Home Buyers - Must Have Tools In Your Garage!

Many first time home buyers are operating on a tight budget after they close on their first home. It is an exciting time and there will be a list of projects as long as your arm once you move in.

Most people will not have the ability to pay professionals to come in and fix everything. A simple fix can turn into disaster and can take all day if you do not have the right tools.

Here are some must have tools that every homeowner should have to handle most of the daily projects....

 

• Dewalt Cordless Drill / Driver
• Set of drill bits and driver bits
• Socket wrench set
• Screw Driver set
• Set of pliers including plumbing
• Hammer (of course)
• Electrical Kit (includes connectors and materials needed for simple electric repairs)
• Flashlight ( you will be surprised how many people forget this)

 

       

 

I personally prefer Craftsman branded hand tools. Not only are they reliable, but they also have a lifetime warrantee. If you happen to break one, bend it or damage it in any way, you can bring it into Sears and they will hand you a new one. I have actually found damaged craftsman tools at a garage sale. I bought them all for a couple of dollars and went right over to Sears. They handed me brand new replacements.

The tools referenced above can be purchased for a combined total of about $400-$500. Buy quality and it will last you a lifetime.

Some of you may be more daring (LIKE ME) and will try to tackle larger projects such as trim work, sheet rock, roofing, window installations, etc

Here are some additional necessary tools for the homeowner who wants to DO IT ALL...

 

• Air Compressor
• 150 Feet Of Air hose (to reach anywhere in your home from your garage)
• Brad Nailer (for moulding and trim work) Can often be purchased as a package with the compressor.
• Spray Gun - Can also be included in a package with the compressor.
• Miter Saw or Compound Miter Saw
• Reciprocating Saw
• Dremel Kit
• Plumbers Kit including a torch to repair pipes

 

 

If you are a home improvement nut like me, then the tools referenced above are just the beginning. You really do not want to see my garage if you are not into tools. However, learning how to use all of the tools is a tremendous money saver. You also get some satisfaction out of creating something yourself. Some of the projects I have completed on this home alone are as follows.... new windows, new roof, finished the basement, cut my own crown moulding design and installed, process of remodeling three bathrooms, installed all new interior doors, and much more.
