The Proxy Error has been rearing its ugly head a lot lately, which is frustrating when you are trying to get to so many blog posts at once and have limited time.

Here are a couple of tricks to prevent you from throwing your computer out the window in frustration:
Frustrated

When you get the proxy erro
r just hit the back button and clear your cache and go right back to where you wanted to go.  Often it will take you there. Sometimes you have to do that a couple of times.

Don't clear the cache
before you hit the back button or you will be banished from the site and will have to go back and log in again.

If you get a proxy error after you have submitted a blog or a comment, don't resubmit it.  Believe it or not it has been submitted.  When you see two or three identical comments on someone's post that is because they kept resubmitting it.

The server is overwhelmed with content and so much activity at once.  That is the good news and the bad news.  But I am sure things will be done to accommodate the continued growth of the site.

Jane,

Hopefully this will all get fixed soon. It sounds like AR needs a hardware upgrade.

I've tried that but frankly it's been so unstable lately that I believe that some over haul work needs to be done by the administrators. i was in Las Vegas at the Luxury Portfolio Conference week and as one of only bloggers, I was showing a group of people my AR blog and my outside blog. It happened 4 times out of 10 and frankly was a bit embarrassing.

I have to disagree with the comments that this is growing pains. We have been growing steadily and if this platform is not stable and consistently functional, it will make us look bad!

Russell,  I am sure they will have to make an upgrade soon because the system won't be able to sustain much more.

Any time I start to see a lot of proxy errors I just take that as a reminder that I should probably be doing something else -- like walking my dog or grabbing my camera and taking some pics.

Jane,

I just hit the refresh button and it usually goes right where I'm trying to go...  haven't had to clear the cache.  The comment thing is frustrating.  I have taken it for granted that it went through and then discovered that it didn't but if I resubmit, lo and behold it did go through both times!  :)

Judi,  the refresh probably works too, I just like to clear all the ugly stuff out of the cache.  I really do think that most of the time it does submit, but now I have stopped checking and just move on.  It takes too long to keep going in and out.  Thanks for the tips, Judi.

Jane on January 19 when I wrote "The Great AR Debate" there was just slightly over 170,000 members on AR.  In under 2 months, more than 7000 members have joined, thus the Dreaded Proxy Server error.

I've tried hitting the refresh button and that sees to work, but can you tell me HOW to clear the Cache?

Hi Jane,

Great advice. It's a problem we have been having for several months and it is frustrating! Yesterday trying to get three open houses in with slides took a ridiculous amount of time and they are still not right! Growing pains for sure!!! Thanks for helping will try it.

Jane:

The dreaded "proxy error" and "bad gateway" always slow down the process. I keep my cool over it until I actually lose data.  That has happened to me doing market reports. I will try your suggestion.

Jane...I too have been experiencing these errors and have been hitting the back button, which generally fixes the problem (sometimes only for two or three entries).  Fast growth seems to always lead with glitches.  Hopefully, there will be a permanent fix soon.

Barb,  you are welcome.

Charita, back at you.  You need to clear your cache anyway on a regular basis.  It is under options.  In Firefox it is clear history and in IE it is delete, but be careful you don't delete your passwords, etc.

Dorie,  actually this morning nothing worked.  I couldn't get in for a long time.  But I do think clearing th cache helps.

Bill,  are you volunteering? :)

Claudette,  you shouldn't lose data.  That really hasn't happened to me.  For some reason it grabs it and stores it.  You can always keep saving to ensure that this doesn't happen again.

Carra,  we can only hope :)

Nick,  thanks. I am sure they will fix it soon since it can't sustain much more growth.

Hi Jane ~ I don't know if it's my super powers or what but I think my record for multiple comments was 29!! It doesn't seem to be related to the dreaded Proxy Error - it happens when I'm writing the comment, not submitting it. I think I hit some key or something and multiple comments post - each with one or few more letters than the last - until the final comment has everything I had typed until the explosion. It's nuts!

Russel hit it right on the head.  There is no excuse for server problems on a commercial website such as this.  Thousands of other websites operate with similar traffic and content without these problems.

He was embarassed when 4 times out of 10 if failed, just think how much of the google juice you spent the last few years building gets erased when the google spider tries to index your page and it cant or it is slow as crap.

This is a major problem and one that active rain has received many complaints about and seems to not give a crap about.

Well, it appears that we have all been there with this proxy error and invalid parameter stuff - or Bad Gateway....

I got so frustrated that I actually stopped trying to comment, because, well, who has the time to try to coddle Active Rain?  I don't.  Now I just try to do my stuff on my perceived off times -  i.e. you won't see me here on Monday morning : )

Jane,

I tried to leave a comment earlier and guess what... the dreaded proxy error! In fact, it booted me out and it took me several attempts to get back.

I always try to look for the positive too, but I am struggling in the tolerance department here. I hope you are right that this will get better soon. I am closing my eyes now and trying to play my favorite song in my head.
