Not your Every Day Car Accessory . . Saturday Photo

By
Real Estate Agent with Mapleridge Realty, CT 203-206-0754 REB.0759001

As I was driving into a lawyer's office this week for a closing I noticed a couple of the cars had some accessories that would not be considered 'Factory Originals'. I found out that the bags were on the cars to protect the mirrors from the birds.

This precipitated a 'Google' to get additional information.

Birds attack shiny surfaces because they see their own reflections. In the case of a window, the bird does not see through the glass: it sees a reflection of the outside, possibly trees and the sky, and another bird of its own species. The real bird does not recognize itself and mistakes the reflected bird for a competitor for territory or mates. It attacks the image in the window, trying to drive the other bird away.

Of course, this is a fruitless exercise. The bird reflection will always be there, forever inaccessible behind an invisible barrier. The real bird often returns many times, compulsively launching itself at the window. If it is very aggressive, it could damage its beak, but most often it just wastes energy and time.

It's mating season and the males are looking to keep away the competition.

The girls in the office got tired of coming out and seeing the windows covered with droppings and the side view mirrors on their cars chipped with 'beak marks'

At least with the baggies they need only spend a couple of minutes covering and uncovering the mirrors when they arrive and leave.

This particular lawyers' office is located near water company property so there is an abundance of wildlife, and obviously some jealous suitors.

I wouldn't have thought of that.  We have a robin who charges one of our garden room windows for hours on end.  Very annoying.  I will just put up a sheet of paper, and maybe he will get the hint.

There are so many windows in my house that get bombarded with birds, we've come to recognize the persistent collision sounds, and no I'm not covering my windows with plastic ...not on my house and not on my car but it is a practical solution nevertheless!  Thanks for the interesting post.

one of my homes had a full bank of windows and I often heard and saw birds dive into them.....one broke it's beak but did eventually fly away.....not a pretty sight.

Now this is an interesting post! I've never seen or heard that but can understand it. We do have a lot of birds here but it's very rare to see or hear a bird crash into the windows.

I wonder what they were thinking in Hitchcock's The Birds. People could have put on white plastic and been safe.

Love it.  Pretty ingenious thinking.  I'm surprised that they actually figured this out in a lawyer's office!  :-)

Ed,

This is the first time I have heard about something like this.  I agree with others that this is good thinking on their part to cover the mirrors.

Ed that's funny.  How do they say it... "Only In America".  Wait a minute, maybe there is some money to be made.  What could we call them "Mirror Muffs" or "DoDo Eliminators" or how about "Frisky Bird Stoppers".

Let us know what you think, we remember you saying once you have a lot of empty commercial space available... where could we take this.

To All: Thanks for the taking the time to post a comment to this little post. This is probably another way of telling us that sometimes we push nature a bit to far.

Gabe, it was the secretary and the paralegal that came up with this. Everybody knows that do all the work anyway. Did I say that right Amy?

Al & Peggy:  Don't say only in America unless you put a North in front of it, unless of course there are no windows or mirrors in Canada, eh?  Actually 'Birds-be-Gone' has a nice ring to it

Ed...I have never seen this or even heard of it before.  Seems like a pretty ingenius was to protect your mirrors from the birds!  With the pictures and no explanation, I would never have guessed the purpose.

Ed, That is a great prevention device if I've ever seen one. I learned long ago, not to park under trees in heavily populated bird areas. It can get pretty nasty!

Ed, this is a constant problem at my office, just about this time of year. We have not been clever enough to think of this though, usually someone just runs outside and screams, waving their arms.

I'm with Al & Peggy, this sounds like a great cottage industry business to me. I have a slew of those plastic bags, LOL. We could just spraypaint a circle with a line through it and sell em for a hefty profit!

Karen, that's a different venture, we'll call it 'Hide-a-Nudge'

Carra, that was my thought when I walked into the office, 'What's with the bags?'

Karen, especially when the berries are ripening. Which reminds me of a poem I once heard

"Birdie, Birdie in the sky, why'd you do that to my eye? Gosh I'm glad that cows can't fly!

Andrea, what's with the 'we?
