Sea Kayak Adventures-Birch Aquarium

These dates: July 7, July 22, Aug. 4, Aug. 19 Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego, is hitting the open water for Sea Kayak Adventures this summer. Participants ages 10 and up will learn the basics of ocean kayaking while exploring the coastline and calm waters of La Jolla.Scripps naturalists and instructors from Ocean Enterprises Express will guide kayakers from the beach at La Jolla Shores to the caves at La Jolla Cove. They will teach participants about the unique local geology while pointing out shorebirds, dolphins, sea lions, seals and other marine life. Beginners are welcome. Advanced reservations are required and space is limited. Time: 8-11 a.m. Cost: $60 Ages: 10+ (ages 10-13 must be accompanied by a paid adult).  858/534-7336 aquarium.ucsd.edu

Sleepovers at the San Diego Zoo  Go to the website below or call for specific dates or to make reservations. The popular Dr. Zoolittle returns again this year with more fun, followed by a private bus tour focusing on animal adaptations that takes guests to the campsite. A buffet dinner is served, followed by a visit from our animal ambassadors. After dinner, attend the nighttime Hunte Show with reserved seating. An evening stroll returns you to camp for a special dessert and crafts. In the morning, there is a hot breakfast and an adventurous scavenger hunt at Camp Timbuktu. Encinitas Concerts by the Sea  The City of Encinitas Parks and Recreation Department is presenting the annual family Summer Sunday Concerts by the Sea at Moonlight Beach from 3-5pm. Carlsbad Triathlon & Celebration  1K Swim - 25K Bike - 5K Run. This race is for everybody: from first-timers to the elites, and their friends and family! The race begins with an open-water ocean swim, which is well marked with buoys and colorful high-flying balloons. Followed by a bike course and finishing with a run that takes you along the beautiful Pacific Ocean coastline. The roads are wide and completely closed to traffic-very safe! Annual Insect Festival-Encinitas  Quail Botanical Gardens from 10-4pm. Explore the wonderful world of insects during Quail Botanical Gardens' annual Insect Festival. Children 12 and under are admitted free and can practice bug collecting, hands-on insect arts and crafts and even taste cooked mealworm larva (in various flavors such as mesquite, teriyaki and barbeque, of course!) Entomologists and other bug experts will be available for questions and more than 10 informational booths will teach and entertain children and adults alike. Summer Fun Camp - Wild Animal Park

Each summer children can choose up to five days of fun from a variety of one-day camp programs at the Wild Animal Park. Each age-appropriate morning program includes an up-close animal encounter, a visit to a special exhibit area, and hands-on activities and games. Many of the classes include an art or conservation project as well. Students can sign up for as many programs as they like. Summer Camp is for students entering grades 1 to 8.
