Tips for your adventurous trail ride:

  • Arrive 30 minutes early
  • Dress appropriately for the weather conditions
  • Wear shoes that are not too wide for stirrups, 4" or less
  • Wear inexpensive sunglasses (if at all)
  • Don't drink to much before the ride
  • When approaching a low lying tree branch, lean forward - A horse will not run its own head into a tree so protect yours!

The horses would like for you to know:

  • If you want to pet us, pet firmly.
  • Don't kick or pull back on the reigns at the same time
  • Don't shake the reigns to make us go because we will get mad
  • Bring the reigns forward, loosen up on our mouth, give us a little kick and make a kissing sound to make us move (a little kick, please)
  • Keep your weight in the stirrups
  • Keep space between other my other four legged buddies

Hi Donna,

I was reading what the horses would like us to know and really wish someone had told me that years ago on my one attempt to ride. I was very young and had no idea but asked for a gentle horse. They gave me "prince" who was old and laid back:) As we sauntered along the horsepath (is that correct?), prince decided to start up on a gallup taking me under low branches and heading torwards a cliff!  I figured out fast how to pull the reigns up and stopped right at the edge of the cliff while everyone in the group started clapping at my wild ride and expertise. I was totally freaked out and never rode a horse again. Guess I don't have the same repoir with horses that I do with other animals:(

TLW -  you really are too kind.  Thankyou.

Karen - I guess there was some fire left in that old horse after all.  Maybe he just felt frisky because he had a light rider for a change!  I had a horse do that to me and by the time he stopped, I was literally hanging off the side of the horse!  A cowboy type came by without breaking his stride and pushed me right back up into the saddle.  A horse is a horse of course, of course!  Thanks for the story, my heart was beating faster and faster.
