My family went to see Tim Burton's new Alice in Wonderland today. It was a rainy Saturday, making it a perfect afternoon to catch a movie. I liked the film a lot. We saw it in Imax 3D- in addition to the colorful characters and eye-popping effects, I thought it had a great message.
It's not giving the plot away to tell you the underlying theme was about the choice we have to either live our lives according to our own ambitions or others' expectations. It's a powerful thought, really, particularly as the film directs it toward young women. The protagonist is Alice, of course, and her quest in the movie is to help shift the balance of power between two ruling women. The male characters are not emasculated by the script at all (they are duly heroic/villainous), but Alice and the queens take center-stage.
Even though I am a man, the film's message resonated with me. Working in a service profession, I have seen salespeople who have shown up to work at a job, not a career... Folks who regarded sales as just something to do until something else came along... Others who have viewed sales as a last resort, not an opportunity. I think this happens because these people either are not living their dreams, or they haven't figured out how a job in sales is actually part of their dreams. It's hard to be successful when you haven't taken ownership in what you're doing.
So what is your dream... Is it to help others? As a realtor or a mortgage broker, you are helping lay the foundations for families, neighborhoods and communities. Your role turns houses into homes. As an insurance agent, you provide security and peace of mind. As a debt or loan modification counselor, you help people keep the fabric of their financial lives from unraveling. And if your dream is to make a good living, well, sales gives you the chance to earn as much as you can.
If you're living and working based on anything other than your own desires, maybe you should take your own break to "Wonderland" to revisit your motivations. Try and step out of your life and look at it from another angle. Talk to people outside of your comfort zone to get a different perspective. Like Alice, discover if you're living your life according to your own ambitions or others' expectations. Take action accordingly.
At Obbee, we truly love working with sales professionals. They're our favorite folks in the world, real or imagined. That's why we use the internet to match them up with motivated prospects, offering qualified sales leads in real time. We may not be in Wonderland, but for us, work is wonderful.
