Alaska..... where men are men and Women Win the Iditarod! Tribute to Susan Butcher
The Iditarod lead musher's and dog teams are on the last stretch of the race.
Lance Mackey is ahead right now and the race will probably be a close one between Lance and Jeff King... but you never know what can happen in the final stretch....
It's a fast and furious race this year and the weather has been kind with 25 below temps it is cold but the winds are not whipping everyone around as they have on some races.
So while we wait for the end of the race and the winners and their dogs to claim their victory...
it is a good time to reflect on the winners of the past.... And one must always think of Susan Butcher...
the gal who showed us all what determination and strong will could do...
March of 1985 Libby Riddles was the first woman to win the Iditarod...
Then in 1986 Susan Butcher won her first Iditarod she went on to win in 1987, 1988 and 1990!
Back in the day the saying was Alaska where men are men and Women Win the Iditarod!Thise two women really riled the men folk... rumbling was louder from the men then the volcanoes
Susan Ran the race 18 times...In 2005 she was diagnosed with leukemia and she died August 2006
The State of Alaska established the first Saturday of every March as Susan Butcher Day.
In Alaska Susan Butcher is known as a true Pioneer... and hero.... Her husband and children David, Tekla and Chisana Monson continue the fight to cure blood cancers.
