It's not hard for depression to rear its ugly head in the lives of the self-employed.

  1. My advertising's not working.
  2. I don't have enough money to market properly.
  3. Why are my competitors getting all the listings?
  4. My car broke down and is going to cost $3,233.47 to repair.
  5. How can I get more ActiveRain points?

I'm not talking clinical depression here. I'm talking about feeling blue, disheartened, gloomy. Wondering why, if life is a bowl of cherries, you feel like the pits. I'm talking about the downs in the normal life cycle of ups and downs. Even Mother and Father Nature created ups and downs: mountains and valleys, night and day, rain and sun.

Even I get depressed occasionally, but I've learned that the best way to work my way out of the depressions is to, uh, work my way out!

Get up and go! Move! Do! Act! Do something! Anything! A nice walk in the neighborhood can be very calming and relaxing. You might even meet someone new. In fact, take a pen and notepad with you. Note things about the neighborhood, about your neighbors' houses. Then, when you get home, send a little note to your neighbors:

  1. Hello! I was walking past your house this morning and noticed your beautiful roses. I just wanted to compliment you on them. I'm a Realtor living at 1234 Penny Lane. If you or anyone you know can use my services, I'd appreciate you letting me know or giving them my contact information. I look forward to walking past your house again and enjoying the beautiful roses.
  2. Hello! I was walking past your house this morning and noticed your new Camaro. I had a 1973 Type LT Rally Sport when I was in college. I loved it! I'm a Realtor living at 1234 Penny Lane. If you or anyone you know can use my services, I'd appreciate you letting me know or giving them my contact information. Best wishes!
  3. Hello! I was walking past your house this morning and noticed the children playing in your yard. My last child just went off to college. I'm going to miss having a child full of energy living at home. I'm a Realtor living at 1234 Penny Lane. If you or anyone you know can use my services, I'd appreciate you letting me know or giving them my contact information. Enjoy your children; they grow up too fast!
  4. Hello! I was walking past your house this morning and saw you leaving. I loved the beautiful green dress you had on! I'm a Realtor living at 1234 Penny Lane. If you or anyone you know can use my services, I'd appreciate you letting me know or giving them my contact information. Hope you had a great day!
  5. Hello! I was walking past your house this morning and saw your child leaving with what looked like a music instrument case. I play the piano in chamber music groups around the County. I'm also a Realtor living at 1234 Penny Lane. If you or anyone you know can use my services, I'd appreciate you letting me know or giving them my contact information. Hope you had a great day!

Common depression often results when you believe that you haven't accomplished all that you can, that you haven't been all that you can be. Self doubt. It can rob you of your energy, which is why it's important to get up and do something.

If your house is a mess, pick up something — anything! — and do something with it. Put it away. Throw it away. Send it to your mother-in-law. Pick up something else and do something with it. Eventually you'll have a clean house, but before eventually gets here, you'll also have worked your way out of your depression.

Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly. — Thomas Huxley (1825-1895)

Russel:  You forgot to add a possible number 6 on your list... which would be:  6)  My poor little kitty just popped a fur-ball on my newly-laundered sheets.  That's always a problem... LOL.

Sometimes when my kitty, Miss Mollie T, does that... SHE just sits there and looks all depressed.  Oh... what's a cat-mother to do ?

Super points Russel - In the up and down world of real estate we can sometimes lose focus on the wonderful things that are constantly going on around us.  There is always something to do that can pull one out of a "funk".  Of course when one, such as yourself, lives in the San Diego region you have a bit of a head start on ditching the gloom. :<) ~Doug

This economy has certainly pushed many of us into a deep blue funk.  Your point about just getting up and doing something really does help.  When the phone isn't ringing and the door isn't swinging, it's easy to just sit behind your desk and mope.  I just joined a gym (anyone that knows me will realize what a HUGE step that is for me!), and it's amazing what working out has done for my mental health.  I'm looking forward to becoming a leaner, meaner fighting machine!

Russel....interaction with other people is a great way to refocus and writing on ActiveRain is another outlet.....whenever I need to refocus because someone pissed me off or because I feel sad at that moment, I log in and start to write.....in order to write something that makes sense, one needs to focus and this does it for me.

Russel,

There's a great deal of wisdom contained in that post.

One thing for sure, sitting on the couch won't change anything.

Russel, Doing something for someone else helps me to feel better when blue. I do like your idea of handwritten notes to people in the neighborhood.

Russel, being outside always does it for me. These days I take my camera and run with it. All your ideas are wonderful I have to say. No outdoors for me for yet another day, I just can't seem to shake this cold and now think the sinuses are infected. But there are things to do even from the recliner and couch, when my eyes are open that is, LOL.

I love this post.  I am going to bookmark it and come back to read again.  Today, I am going to preview houses and enjoy the beautiful sunny afternoon.  My camera will be in the car, so I'll have a great opportunity to take some pictures of my town in the sunshine.

Right on the mark, Russell - as usual.  When I start to feel blue, I realize I'm thinking about myself.  The cure is to go out and do something nice for someone else.  Works like a charm.

Love it!  My Mom used to say you can be blue, worried or whatever all you want but only between 3:00 and 3:15.  At 3:15 get over it and get out there and do something - you'll feel better, trust me!

Great post Russel. It would be really easy to be really depressed if you did not get out of the funk and DO SOMETHING! Andrea and I have the same idea-get the camera and go!

Russel:  Going from being depressed... to NOT being depressed... is not an easy thing to do.  Several commentors above seem to have found short, easy ways of pulling out of it... but unfortunately, different personality "types" can find things like this extremely difficult to do.

Occasionally... just acting out of "blind faith" can be a way to extricate one's self from the hooks of depression... if that makes any sense.

I loved the post Russel, and the lesson on just doing something to pull yourself up and out of the hole. Great lesson on life in general.

Great advice Russel:  I do practice the technique of keep moving when I am blue.  I really does help.  I also make a point to do something nice for someone else and that gets me out of my self indulgent blues.

Russel, this is also just what I needed.  I just told a friend that I was fighting being depressed. But I probably was anyway.  Encouragement does alot for me.

Hey, Folks.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I have read all the comments, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those below. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.

Hey, Karen Anne - In the thirty months that we've had Zoey the Cool Cat, she has yet to give us a furball. She's an American shorthair with ginger tabby coloring. Don't know if that makes any difference.
