Children, Autism, and Environmental Toxins, a connection? Is this really a surprise? The latest research is now concluding that exposure to environmental toxins may be the cause of autism in children. As a mom of a child that was once diagnosed autistic, and as a a Chiropractor that treated many children with autism, this is no a surprise at all!
Let me start by saying I am becoming fifty years old, and as most often people do, I have reflected back on my life and asked myself "have I really made a difference?" My heart says yes because as I mentioned, I have helped many children with autism (including my son), but my head says something different. Five years ago I left my practice in New Jersey to start a whole new life in Florida. I'm not sure what the pull was but it was very strong and we as a family decided we needed to make the move. I did not continue in my practice but have been longing for a way to help children on the spectrum in a much bigger way. My son Lucas is now 17 years old and is a vibrant, intelligent, honor roll student. He likes to play Lacrosse and last football season not only played in but ran a couple of fantasy football leagues himself. With much urging from my husband, he and I have made it our goal to help as many people as we can and make that bigger difference. We believe that if we tell our story, educate, and communicate through the means of the Internet we may be able to help people recover from autism (and autism spectrum disorders) and possibly reduce the crazy increase in number of children being diagnosed with autism everyday. This is the first post of many blogs. Please comment and let me know your thoughts as well as give us input on exactly what you would like us to blog about.
Children, Autism, and Environmental Toxins, what does it all mean? What is an environmental toxin? Wikipedia's definition of environmental toxin - Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem.
Do we pollute our children with the introduction of contaminants into our children's environment? Did we expose our fetus to toxins by exposing ourselves to toxins while we were pregnant? Does this cause instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to our children? I say yes! How about the toxins in immunizations? Many people believe that their children were harmed by what most people believe to be the answers to world wide epidemics. Could this be? Could it be that certain children simply cannot detox after these immunizations? Maybe their immune system was poor when they received them, maybe their liver was not strong enough to detox the toxins involved. Maybe there was a genetic weakness. Toxins are toxins, and I know after years of treating kids on the autism spectrum they are most definitely not only sensitive to invironmental toxins but are also sensitive to food. Yes food, and I'm not talking only about food allergies or sensitivities. I'm talking about what is in the highly processed food that we feed our children. I saw many children on the autism spectrum react in multiple negative ways after ingesting these toxins. The negative effects ranged from causing digestive upsets to full blown neurological melt downs.
