Daylights Savings Arrived - It's Time To Get Walking & Drop a Few LBS
I for one am glad Daylight savings time has arrived. It is easy in the winter here in Illinois to get cabin fever, with weeks and weeks of snow, cold weather, biting winds and short days, no-one can be blamed us for wanting to stay inside.
Exercising at home on your own treadmill or at the gym is good but I never feel I have pushed myself. I do my religious 30 minutes and then stop. When I am outside walking I not only exercise but enjoy the world outside. Today was my first day of walking because there is more light in the evening which is the best time for me in my busy schedule. I walk along the Good Shepherd Way Path that is in front of Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. It is 0.6 miles for one circuit.

In the center of the path is a large pond which when the weather gets a little warmer and it has completely de-frosted will be home to a family of swans as well as the usual ducks, geese and the odd cormorant.

Good Shepherd Way still has some wet spots and these are likely to last well into the spring. The ground is pretty saturated with water from all the melted snow and with the rains on top it has no where to go. These puddles are too big to jump over and walking on the grass is very wet so our detours have to be prettty wide. It all adds to the calf muscles work-out!

There are no bicycles, blades, skateboards or any motor vehicles allowed on the path. In the back ground the car is on Route 22 which is a busy road but the path is set a good 50 feet inside so they are not a problem.

The walking path is not completely flat, you can see me walking down the slope, so the muscles get a good work out. There is much to watch, birds, deer, ducks and squirrels were all seen today in the grounds of the hospital. I feel good, today I walked 4 laps which is 2.4 miles. I started with the intention of 3, but the day was just so nice it was no big deal to go for one more! That is why I like being outside.
Another area I like walking along are the walking paths by Lake Barrington Village Hall. They undulate a little more so the work out is even better.
I encourage all of you who need to drop a few lbs, put on the sneakers and go for a walk. Even in the breezy weather the exercise will keep you warm enough, you'll feel so good and it is so good for you. See you out there!

Corinne: I fear all of us in Illinois probably are recuperating from a long long winter. Last week's warmer temps and sunnier days give us hope. Your article reminds my wife and I that we need to get out to enjoy it and do ourselves a favor by toning back up in our own surroundings. Thanks!
