Vandalism of Trees at St. Mary's-by-the-Sea

An evil, vicious act of vandalism occurred about 11:30 PM last evening at St. Mary's-by-the-Sea.  Someone took advantage of the cover provided by the storm to assault nearly all of the trees along the St. Mary's promenade with a chain saw.  The result was one tree cut down completely and others severely damaged.  St. Mary's is a park enjoyed by many people throughout the city, not just those who live there.  Without the trees for shade, it will not be the beautiful leafy park that so many of us enjoy.

Neighbors gathered to discuss the situation and all were very upset.  Residents living close to St. Mary's heard the chain saws and thought that the City or United Illuminating were cutting trees to restore power.  It was raining and dark and windy, so no one so far has seen anything.  If you were driving by St. Mary's at 11:30 PM and saw anything, please let us know so we can get the word to the Police.

One resident from another section of the city sent me an e-mail to say, "I'm shocked.  I walk there every day.  On nice days I sit on the rocks by the water to breath the salt air for my sinus troubles.  I see the same people daily and it's a community of friends."

Hi Gail!  I'm so sorry to hear about your vandal--who in the world would do something like that?  Teens?  I can't imagine an adult who doesn't respect nature.  I do hope that someone, some where saw this person and reports them.  The punishment should be to have to replace all of them with MATURE trees--not saplings!

Have a great week...

Gail, I have never understood why anyone would do a senseless thing like this.  What joy or pleasure could they possibly get from this?

Debe, Joan & George - This is such a heartbreak.  It was on the Channel 12 news.  It doesn't make any sense at all.  Everyone loved the trees as they made the walk along the water more beautiful.  Someone had to be truly motivated by vengence to do such a thing.  The police found the chain saw and I understand the Mayor is furious about this incident.  15 beautiful mature trees were destroyed.

This was a pretty bold move as the noise of the chain saw alone should have deterred them. If they will commit this type of crime without concern of being caught, it only makes me shudder to think what thir next move will be. Hope they get caught QUICKLY!

Sheldon - None of us can imagine.  It's a crime against the environment.

Ruth - It is downright creepy.  The Mayor has pledged his full support and it has become a priority for our Police Department.  We are offering a reward which is now approaching $2,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of this person.

Hi Gail ~ That's just obscene.  And heartbreaking since it will take years to replace them.  That's great that a reward is being put together.

I hope that they catch the bums that are responsible for this needless vandalism. Maybe they need to take a chainsaw to their trunks...

Liz - The Police have put their #1 detective on this and they have some excellent leads.   We are very hopeful that there will be arrrest soon.

Michael - I hope the Police get this guy under custody and throw away the key.  If he gets out on bail, I hate to think of what local vigilantes would do to the guy.  The neighborhood is in an uproar over this.
