My owner is a Realtor for Century 21 Award in San Diego's Mission ValleyOver by my open house today I saw a tree across the freeway that looked weird.

I got out our Canon Rebel camera, put the 300mm telephoto lens on it, and took a couple of pictures.

It looked fake, but I have never heard of a fake 50-foot tall tree!

When I got home and showed them to my marketing guru, who is an expert in all things nature, he told me that it's a fairly rare tree throughout the nation:

the Tower Tree (Pinus cellii telephoniensis)

Tower tree

Tower tree

Apparently telephone companies disguise their transmission towers now so that they don't cause visual blight to neighborhoods. Personally, I think the tree looked stupid, but I guess it's no worse than telephone poles and tall palm trees.

Cell phones are very important part of our lives and towers are important.  I am glad they make them look like thing in the environment.

We have some here in Arizona that are made to look like palms.

Jim, we have some of those here. I agree, they look pretty stupid, LOL. The one I am thinking of sticks up way higher than the actual trees around it. I would think they could at least make the tree look real, perhaps they should work in conjunction with Christmas tree manufacturers.

That is interesting. It does look better than the regular towers. I haven't seen the fake ones here yet..

Jim - The telephone companies don't quite have it right yet. At least it is a little more attractive than the regular tower. It's green.

Neat idea....they haven't made it here yet. can you imagine how beautiful everything would look without any poles?  Have a great day!

Remember though when you aren't looking at it for a long time, most people wouldn't notice it and that is the import thing. They know most people are driving and just look out their window aren't going to notice how stupid it looks.

Jim - I have seen them all over for a while disguised as trees. They are kind of funny looking, but at least they are trying to blend into the environment as opposed to having a large tower!

Jim, I like the tower trees better better than the utility poles!

Hi Jim!  I love your name for the pseudo trees!  We have them here and I don't know which looks worse--those or the bare cell towers!  I guess if I were living near one, I'd prefer the pseudo trees and I'd probably try to add a few branches to them too!

Still laughing at the 'nature' name!  Russel is a hoot!

Jim - That is great.  We have some of those in our town as well, one at the Country Club, the only challenge is some of the "branches" have fallen off.  One of my favorite cell towers in town is the one at the local Christian church that has one in the form of a large cross.

Jim, I have never seen one like that.  I guess I'm in the minority here but this looks almost a bit creepy to me.

Hmmm ... and I thought keeping costs down so people could buy things like food and health insurance was all the rage.  Seems like a waste of money to me.

Hi Jim,  We have some of those "pines" here in Northern California too.  The ones in Los Angeles are disguised as palm trees.

Hey, everyone.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I have read all the comments, but rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and I'll head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.
