BIG SOUTH FORK TENNESSEE: Chaps or Chinks?

By
Real Estate Agent with Tennessee Recreational Properties

This is a common sight in Big South Fork National ParkWhen you're riding in Big South Fork National Park, you'll see riders wearing a variety of Western-style clothing and gear. Many riders wear chaps or chinks.

Chaps and chinks are both usually made of smooth leather, or suede, and are usually seen in colors such as black, dark brown, navy, dark green, tan and cream. They can be simple, plain and utilitarian or custom made with a combinations of colors and finishes, with fringe or other decorative touches such as conchos.

They are intended to protect the rider's legs from brush and are worn over one's trousers, usually jeans. They buckle on around the waist, with each leg cut from a single piece of leather that wraps completely around the rider's leg, zipping from thigh to ankle. The bottom of Western chaps is usually cut with a flare that allows a smooth fit over boots, while English "schooling chaps" are cut very narrow and very straight.

Chaps are also useful for trapping body heat and many riders wear them during spring and fall to provide extra warmth, especially since they block the wind. They also provide a little extra "grip" on a leather saddle.

Chinks, a word is derived from the Spanish "chinkaderos," are half-length chaps that stop several inches below the knee. They are similar to chaps, but are shorter and they're fastened around the rider’s thighs with straps that snap or buckle, allowing the chinks to move more freely from that point downward. The fringe on chinks is also usually longer and more prominent than fringe found on chaps. They are cooler to wear, more suited to riders in very warm climates, and are favored by those who embrace the California "vaquero" tradition.

You can buy these chaps or chinks through the Tack Ranch online catalog

I love my chaps!  They really make a difference keeping me warm on the bike.  I have black leather for the bike, but I once bought a pair of chaps, long before I started riding, that are fleece.  At the time, I bought them thinking they would be fun for Halloween for a cowboy costume.  I never really thought about it before, but I bet they are for horse riding.  I've used them a couple times for the bike before I got the leather ones.  They are really warm.

Leslie, I too have a pair for motorcycle riding.  Although mine are black and custom made, I really like the brown ones above (chaps).  They look like very high quality.  Hope you get some non-iron pony comments going.

A very nice explanation of the difference between the two.

Hi, Sharon. Leather sure cuts the wind and keeps you so much warmer. I have a pair of smooth black leather chaps, too, but yours probably look better than mine. The first time I wore them, I was on a new horse who was quite thin; my girth wasn't tight enough and the saddle slipped to the side, depositing me and the chaps into the mud!

Hi, Nick. We see many riders in the Big South Fork who look like models in a magazine ad, with gorgeous chaps and wonderful western hats. I believe in safety first so I always wear a helmet and somehow, you lose the effect!

Motorcycle riders get to wear protective chaps with a protective helmet and look great but I'm not about to trade my horse for an iron pony!

Hi, Judi. I had never seen chinks before I started riding in the Big South Fork. They look great but it seems to me that it sure is time consuming to deal with them when you have to duck behind the proverbial tree!

Leslie, I understand your point of view...my cousin is an avid equestrian, I just took another route particularly since I don't have the acerage to keep a horse and I'm not sure I want the responsibility of taking care of such a large, beautiful animal.

Your post just goes to show that you never know what kind of information you'll find on Active Rain!  I don't know that I will ever have to make the choice between chinks and chaps but at least I'll know what I'm talking about.

Thanks for something NEW on AR.
