When Is a Re-Blog Not a Re-Blog?

By
Real Estate Agent with Integrity Real Estate Group

This morning as I logged into Active Rain I noticed a post that was label as a "re-blog".  Except when I looked at the post it wasn't a re-blog but a cut and paste of another blog.  They original posters name were included but not the link back to the orginal post.  So instead of getting 25 points for a reblog they were getting 250 points for "original" content.

But wait this gets better.  The original post was plagarized.  Yep it was a copy of a post from another real estate media source.  So not only did the original bloggers on Active Rain steal content from another source but now a second Active Rain member had been caught in the trap as well.

As has been pointed out in numerous post on Active Rain it only takes a second or two to check to see whether content is original.  If you are going to "re-blog" a post you may want to protect yourself and make sure the content you are about to use didn't come from somewhere else.  Many of us read various media sources and chances are on any given day will spot a blog post where that content has been reused without the proper citations.

It can't be said enough times.  Plagarism and copyright are wrong!

Hallelujah!  I would never have thought to that way of turning a re-blog into a fresh blog!  I guess I'm not devious enough.  I think, when we see things like that, we should remember that there is a "flag" button on every post.  It should be used in cases like that!

I wish people would just create their own content and play by the rules.

Cindy, I hope that you did flag that post...Perhaps AR needs to add something about copyright and plagarism when members log in...at least a reminder!

I too was offended by the not really a re-blog post. So I went to the original. I did not know it was  cut and paste as well. Hmmm? Do you google search every well written blog to see if it was published somewheree else earlier?

I have noticed in the short time I have been on AR a number of members that appear to be point chasing. I personally have not found my voice hear yet so I am mostly doing a lot of reading and commenting to get my points. I guess we would all like to be high on the point roster, but it is matter of whether you are willing to compromise your integrity for points.

Rndy-I don't really care how people decide to get their points on AR but when it perputuates plagarism then it is an issue.

Richard-I've sent both posters private emails in hopes they will do the right thing and remove the content.  Hope springs eternal.

Harry-it doesn't make any sense to cut and paste content from a well respected media source.  The lightbulb went off in my head as soon as I saw the content and knew where it came from.

Rebecca-there is a box you have to check when you post that asks IS THIS ORIGINAL CONTENT (paraphrase) if you check the box YES then you get your 250 points.  Obviously some folks don't read that little warning before they post.

Glenn-glad you saw it too.  I don't google search every well written post.  I just happened to recognize that one and then when I saw the trail of cut and paste I felt it needed to be mentioned.

Jay-you have taken the right approach.  Though you voice will come when you start just putting blogs out there.  Eventually they get easier and it all clicks together.

Cindy, so how can someone who cuts and pastes someone else's work not know it is wrong. I do not re-blog that often, but when I do I just hit the reblog, be sure to give credit to the original poster in my comment section and move on, thanks for the heads up...

Cindy:  What in the world is wrong with people?  All for 225 points?  Give me a break.  So sad that some people can't even think for themselves....literally.

Cindy....I agree with Chris Ann - What can people be thinking?  They can't be blinded by points, can they?

Gerry-this one was a double whammy.  An original post that was plagarized and then a "re-blog" that was a cut and paste of the original.

Chris Ann-I know the days when I can't figure out something new to say I can always go back to my own content and repost.  Resorting to stealing national news articles is a reciepe for disaster.

Carra-I don't spend my days looking for plagarism or copyright violations but some of them are so glaring that you can't help but notice them.  I guess some folks didn't learn the basic lessons in elementary school.

Shame shame shame on them!  These people should be sent to the Active Rain penalty box on their way to plagiarism jail.  Seriously.

Brian-one of the folks in this scenario did go back and add the original credit and removed the points from their blog.  However it still is not right to cut and paste entire articles with just the name of the original publication.  Oh well.  To nice of a day today to worry anymore about why folks don't understand the basics.

Cindy:

Don't these people know that blogging is about "writing" - not stealing. It is pretty clueless to cut and paste a post in the first place but this seems as though it was a double dose of clueless.

Claudette-the original blogger has now gone back and given credit to the original author and removed their points.  The second blogger also indicated they know the post came from somewhere else but still left their points intact even though they should have the red X.

Cutting and pasting an entire article and then "giving credit" is still not appropriate.  A paraphrase, comments and then a link is the way it should be handled.  Oh well.

I have to think that cosmic justice will eventually "reward" these imposters.  It took me a long time of observing, reading, commenting and trying to figure it all out before I ever thought about putting up a post.  Of course, I really wish I had not waited so long, LOL, but I did and that's that.  Anyway, I particularly do not appreciate people who cheat and game the system, BUT I do know people are not stupid and will quickly figure out the "fakes" from the real deal...after all, if they cheat at this level, would anyone want to hire them to handle a huge investment?  Don't think so.

I prefer to be able to look myself in the mirror and to sleep well at night.
