Advising the Seller on Color Choices

By
Home Stager with Academy of Staging and Redesign

"I've already discussed the two Color Keys and how one Key is for cool colors and the other Key is for warm colors. But what I didn't mention before is that there is a warm and a cool version of every color. There are stark whites and there are warm whites (often referred to as off-white). There are cool blacks and there are warm blacks. There are cool blues and there are warm blues. There are cool reds and there are warm reds. And you can't always tell which is which by looking at the paint sample chips at your local paint store or your fan deck. And you won't always be able to tell from the walls, ceiling or flooring either.

Paint companies do a pretty good job of dividing the colors from warm to cool and displaying them that way in their racks at the store. But it can be common to find all yellow shades and tints on the warm side and all shades and tints of blue on the cool side. So you have to be careful.

For this reason, advise your seller to pull many possible paint swatches from the store rack and bring them all back to the house. Paint choices should always be made in the environment where they will reside. Colors will change depending on the natural lighting in the room and colors will change at different times of the day and during different weather conditions. They can also be affected by adjacent colors and light bulbs. In an effort to keep this as simple as I can, let me just categorically state that one must never advise a seller to buy specific colors of paint without testing them first in every room of the house.
