Peninsula Living: A hike to Point Bonita Lighthouse, Marin County, California

Last Sunday I cleared the calendar so my husband and I could take a needed day of R&R and enjoy the gorgeous spring weather.

A 45-minute drive took us from San Mateo County, through San Francisco, and across the Golden Gate Bridge into Marin County. We parked and began our hiking day heading up into the Marin Headlands, along a ridge, and down to Rodeo Valley and out to Point Bonita Lighthouse.

Because of the remote, somewhat hazardous location, the lighthouse is open for tours only a few short hours on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, and then only when winds are light. To reach the lighthouse, one walks through a tunnel blasted into the rock, then across a rickety bridge where only two people are allowed at a time.

We had a fine day of hiking in a gorgeous area and returned home energized and refreshed.  Enjoy the snapshots!

Hi Debi -- Gene was fine on the bridge, even though it trembled a bit under foot, and he doesn't like heights. The whole days was such fun nothing much could have bothered us! Glad you enjoyed the photos.

Lottie, that lighthouse really is perched at the edge of the cliff.  I recently visited the lighthouse at Jupiter, FL and climbed 100+ steps to get to the top.  Yours seems like a much shorter climb.

Good morning, Darcy and Tony -- glad you enjoyed the photos. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Marlene -- What a climb you had! Most lighthouses are elevated, but here with our coastal bluffs, several are set lower and closer to the water's edge--helps get the light out, below the fog.

Lottie - I can certainly see why wind is a factor on using the bridge . Suspension bridges are rather interesting to walk on as they bounce with every step you take.

Hi Kathy -- you're certainly right about the bridge bouncing, even with only two of us on it at a time. Pretty exciting and fun.

Lottie, your photo's of the Point Bonita Lighthouse and hike there are gorgeous. I'll be it felt great to clear the books and take a well deserved break. If we don't take care of ourselves, no one else will. One day is all many of need to get refreshed.

Hi Peggy, thanks for stopping by. You're absolutely right, as Stephen Covey puts it, we must 'sharpen the saw.' Hiking does that for me.
