What does doing a good job and giving your best really mean anyways?

Foundation of Always Giving our BestI think so many of us have learned from and been inspired by someone - whether a parent, colleague or mentor - "to always give our best."

Here's an example for you to understand where I'm going with this:

You have a builder laying the foundation for a home (maybe yours?)   If it's not set the right way there will be problems.  What if the foreman said to his worker don't worry about having it "just right" "no one will know" because he's more concerned with the schedule to just get it done.

Now what if the worker said "but I will know."

I think we'd all like to associate ourselves with the worker and this point illustrates that if you think it doesn't matter whether or not you give something your best or not - it does - and on so many levels especially if you pride yourself and your business on "giving your clients your best."

I'm certain you've heard the old saying "you never get a second chance to make a first impression."  This statement is true and can be applied to so many areas of our lives.

In real estate doing your best can be the difference between being a client's real estate professional of choice and finding yourself with lots of referral business or being known and referred to as the real estate professional "not" to choose.

Giving your best comes down to meeting and exceeding the wants and needs of your clients and can be measured by the following:

  1. They're happy with your services (you can see it and they share it with you)
  2. They continue to rely on you for your expertise and services
  3. They recommend you to others

Customer Service - it's before, during and after the purchase

So what can you do to ensure you're providing your best for all the clients you interact with?  The following list are some suggestions for giving your best:

  • Be Prepared

Clients want this and expect this.  Be on time.  Have everything you need for your meeting/call.  Know your stuff.

  • Be Confident

Believe in yourself and your abilities.  If you don't believe what you're saying and sharing with your clients what makes you think they will?

  • Be Open

Give them 100% of your attention.  Make eye contact.  Nod your head.  Ask for clarification.  Don't have the attitude that something will not work - find the best way to make it work!

  • Be Positive

Avoid negative talk.  Show enthusiasm.  Have fun when you interact with your clients - who doesn't like being around someone that clearly loves what they do?

  • Be a LeaderGo the extra mile - Give your clients your best

Being an enthusiastic and positive leader - guiding your clients through the wealth of information that they may not fully understand - builds trust and confidence in you.  Have a plan, a vision and clear direction for how you will get them results.

  • Be Serious

Clients want to know and feel you are committed to their goals

  • Be a Hard Worker - Give it Your Best

Clients are drawn to people who are willing to work hard.  Define how you will work hard for your client.  Demonstrate in action.  Go the extra mile.

The fact is the real estate industry is extremely competitive with numerous real estate professionals competing for the same listings and opportunities.  By following the above suggestions you can maximize your chances of not only getting the opportunity to work with a client but having them become a long term client and also one of your greatest sources of future business.

You have to accept whatever comes and the only important thing is that you meet it with the best you have to give. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

My husband and I have been self employed for nearly all of our adult lives. For many years we operated a wholesale mortgage branch and our success was directly related to our level of customer service- the only way we could compete with the larger lenders. The above characteristics have always been our way of doing business - I don't know any other way. These days, running your business this way is the only way to survive. Great post!

Anne Marie,

Your blog post and especially the video has inspired me to continue to do me very best each and every day no matter what obstacles I run into. It is sometimes hard to keep your head up and continue to move forward when so much can go wrong, but you have to. Don't ever give up, especially not before you've tried!

Thanks so much, I really needed this today :)

Pat - You're so welcome - I love that quote too - 1st impressions do stick!

Cari - Exactly and you realized early on in your business that it was the only way to run it and survive plus I'm sure your clients love the service and attention they get - so much of what's missing sometimes when you deal with the bigger companies.  Congrats on your success!

Liz - well hello my friend - how nice to see you - yes, we must be on opposite schedules and my schedule has been sporadic and chaoctic but no complaints - just busy - a good thing.  Thank you for the wonderful compliment on the post - again it goes back to what I was trying to convey "give your best in everything" and I truly try to stick to that philosophy in everything I do.  Don't be a stranger here or on facebook :)

Jane - thank you seconding Liz's comment - so sweet of you and happy I could give you some things to think about.

Constantine - I know what you're saying - I cry "everytime" I view this video and often I use it when I'm feeling defeated.  Thank you for the great compliment - as I said to Liz about I give everything including my blog everything I've got because my readers matter to me.  Love having you as a new reader and look forward to getting to know you more :)

Susan - so very true.  Isn't nice to be able to rest at the end of the day knowing that you gave it your best!

Lou - Thanks :P) Always nice to have you stop by!

Crystal - I'm so happy that I could provide that for you and that it came at the right time :)

Erica - Thank you - you are so sweet!  It's ok if not flagged though - just wanted to share some motivation and good feeling so everyone could feel as good as I was :)

Anne Marie - Facing the Giants is my all time favortie movie.  Love it - I used to show it to my students because of all of the powerful messages in it.  This post certainly is a wonderful reminder to do all things well because it is the right thing to do, not because you may benefit.  Thanks so much!
