The importance of ground type for horses

If you are considering south Central Texas  for your next horse property make sure to investigate the ground type of the properties you look at!  There is a difference!   "Black dirt" can be extremely messy, "sandy loam" is the best for horses as it provides necessary drainage. Bad drainage can lead to abscesses and thrush and other hoof issues.  Both can support a good grass ground cover.  There is nothing worse than having to go out to feed after a healthy rain storm ( not to mention many days of said rain storms ) in black muck! Some listing agents might not know about the importance of soil type, and some buyers agent may also be at a loss.  Work with an experience horse property specialist to help you find the right property in the right area with the right set up and with the proper ground type you are looking for. Looking for a horse property or a ranch in between Austin, Houston, and San Antonio give me a call.  That is my stomping rounds!

Absolutely!  Our little ranch is half Houston black, half Austin chalk.  Future archeologists will find at least a couple of mud boots when excavating the site of our paddock, where they sunk so deep that I had to pull my foot out and limp back to the house and just leave them there.

That is too funny Tricia!  I just got done hauling in some sandy loam for my arena and my round pen and some gravel for my driveway right before the recent rains.
