This weekend: Tasting Barrels Without The Crowds

barrels of wineThis weekend is the BEST weekend to go wine tasting in Northern Sonoma County.  For the last two weekends, over 100 wineries played host to thousands of guests for the 32nd annual barrel tasting event.  The crowds are gone, but there is still wine in those barrels and some wineries are still selling futures!

Barrel wine may not be on the tasting list of the day, so here is what you do.  Go to wineries that participated in barrel tasting the last 2 weekends.  You can find this list at www.wineroad.com. Go into the tasting room and sample some of their wines.  If you like their wine (some of it sucks isn't great) then politely ask if they still have wine in the barrel that you could taste.

In some wineries, the barrel will be near or in the tasting room.  In other wineries they may have already used a wine thief to draw wine out and into a jug which is sitting out of sight behind the tasting counter.

Watch this video of last weekends barrel tasting event and I dare you to tell me we don't know how to have fun here in Sonoma County.  And if you're going ... wear a purple shirt.

That does look like fun, Cynthia! It's been too many years since I toured California wine country.
