This is the first time I have ever seen a Chicken Hawk! We were so surprised to come up on this guy. He flew away when we approached and his wing span was MASSIVE! He came right back to his feast and we turned the car around to get these shots. Nature is amazing!

Hey, Stephanie - That's actually a young turkey vulture (Cathartes aura).

It's rare to find them in a vulnerable position on the ground like that, but since I know you live over near Santee Lakes, there is one over at the Lakes that loves to hang around on the ground at the water's edge.

I'm still trying to get a good picture of him, but it's obvious that he's not yet comfortable being on the ground, and just as soon as I get anywhere near close enough to take a good picture with a 300mm focal length lens, he's outta there. I think he's just being a tease! LOL
