I must still have words on my mind, now I am thinking about Text Lingo!I phone

We recently had a guest speaker come to our real estate office and leave us all with goodie bags.  Going through the bags you found the normal items vendors give away, magnet, pens, pocket calendar, notepad etc.  However, one item caught the attention of my co-worker who immediately began to laugh.  It was "A Parent's Introduction to Text Messaging Lingo"

As Realtors, we have all had to get on board the text train in order to communicate efficiently and effectively.  Most of us probably know and use the familiar:

  • lol - laugh out loud
  • ttyl- talk to you later
  • k- okay
  • r- Are
  • ur- Your
  • thx- Thanks
  • b- Bye

We  also utilize these shortcuts  on Facebook, Twitter when comment and even Active Rain Blogs!  At times these shortcuts can be confusing as a foreign language.  Do you know the lingo??  I thought I would share some with you!

  • BM&Y-Between me and you
  • TOY- thinking of you
  • OMW- on my way
  • PTB- please text back
  • IDK- I dont know
  • IMO in my opinion
  • BTW- by the way
  • J/K- just kidding
  • PLZ- Please

For additional examples search the web for the phrase "texting lingo"  You will LOL!

Tom, I can't wait to see your response when someone ask for the definition of that one :)

Marilyn, especially since it goes right along with Tom's, you might want to add TMI = Too Much Information!

I am not a big texter, so I sort of ignored learning these shortcuts.  But then I started using Instant messenger and picked up a few.  Then Twitter happened and I started using them all the time in my tweets.  And now, I am sad to say, the acronyms are starting to work their way into my normal email communication!

The ones I seem to use most ofter are:

IRL - In real life

NP - no problem

OTP - on the phone

Great post Marilyn!  I work with First Time Buyers and they use texting almost exclusively. I'm learning the lingo slowly but surely.  It's been fun!

Texting is GR8. The parties immediately get to the reason of the communication. No weather discussions.

Texting language is great. I text my grandchildren.

But be sure to limit the text shorthand to the phones.

I saw a couple of realtors using text shorthand in the realtor remairks, and I didn't know what they meant. So I texted the agents to ask them WTF did that ahorthand mean? :-)

What amazes me is that my daughter was standing next to her friend and they are texting between themselves! I asked her why can't you just talk, you're standing next to her. She said: "it's quicker and more private to text".

This is the start of the downfall of Western Civilization! They will loose the art of communications and expression of though.

All I can say is that I'm glad I don't have to communicate that way!

When I talk with copywriting clients we use real words - sometimes an hour's worth on the phone - because I need to really understand their business, their goals for the copy, etc. In other words, we need to communicate real information.

Even e-mail (using whole words) isn't satisfactory because you can't stop right there and clarify a question or an answer.

And when I talk to friends ... we share thoughts, ideas, and experiences, not little sound bites.

However, I can see the use in real estate sales where you want to use whatever your clients are comfortable with.

There are complete lists out there for parents to kep understand what their children are communicating.  Instant messaging is a big thing in children protect.  I recommend all parents learn the language their children speak online.
