Internet Moving Slow? Proxy Errors on ActiveRain? No connection at all?!?

This morning, I tried to log in to ActiveRain a bunch of times and I would either get Proxy Errors or it simply would not connect at all.  (Bad connection error.)  Then again, if you are not connecting at all, I guess you won't be able to see this page.  You might want to print it out for future reference.

The Proxy Error-- I know-- is an ActiveRain problem.  But I was also getting them today and as soon as I did the following things, I stopped getting the Proxy Error.  Probably coincidence, but maybe not.

Everybody probably knows this already, but for those of you less technically skilled, this will help you if your internet ever goes down or is moving very slow.

A.  Try resetting your modem and/or router.  (If you already know this simple "trick" just skip to step B.)

This is the fastest way to do it and this seems like it works about 75% of the time.

1.  Unplug your cable modem.

2.  Unplug your router.

3.  Wait 10 or 20 seconds.

4.  Plug in your cable modem.

5.  Plug in your router.  (Make sure to do everything in this order.)

Now give it a minute or two to get all fired up and try to visit a website and surf around.  Did it help?  If not, try this...

B.  Try repairing your connection.  It's very simple.

1.  Go to your Start Menu and then to "control panels."

2.  Find the one that says "Network Connections."  It might be called something slightly different in different versions of Windows, but it will be Network-something-or-other.

3.  After you double click on Network Connections, you will see something that says "Local Area Connection."

4.  Right click on that and a menu will appear.  Left click on DISABLE connection.

5.  Now right click on Local Area Connection again and left click on ENABLE connection.

6.  Finally, right click on Local Area Connection one more time and click REPAIR connection.

7.  Open your browser and try surfing around.  Did that work?  No?!?

Now it's time for step C, and I really hate this step.  I wrote everything I wrote above so you, dear reader, can avoid step C.

C.  Call your internet service provider and ask them to send a signal to your modem to be sure it's working properly.

Of course, if you go as crazy as I do when sitting on hold all day long, then you'll print this out and try to solve your problem with Steps A and B.

Good luck!!!
