Vacation Getaway

If anyone is interested in a relaxing vacation getaway, I would suggest Hatteras, North Carolina.  It's about one hour south of Nags Head, NC.  My family and I reside in Warrenton, Virginia and just returned from a week at the beach in Hatteras.  Although Frisco is what I would consider to be desolate, we still managed to keep our two young children entertained.  It's definitely not commercialized with fast food restaurants or grocery stores.  The nearest Food Lion was about 20+ minutes away in a neighboring town, Buxton.  We visited Cape Hatteras and went to, what some people referred to, "the Point."  You do need 4-wheel drive access to drive onto the beach (and don't forget to let some of the air out of your tires).  As you drive down the somewhat narrow beach strip, you are surrounded by the ocean on either side.  There is one side of the beach where water trickled over a sand bar to what became a pond-like swimming hole for kids and adults to wade in the water.  This was ideal for my son who wasn't too crazy about the crashing waves in the mainstream beach.  It truly was a great find and worth the ride out there.

I've always liked it down there.  I'd also recommend the ferry from Cedar Island to Okracoke Island.  Okracoke is a cool place, too.  As well as the beach around Oregon Inlet and the Bodie Island Lighthouse.  Don't forget to hang gliding just south of Kill Devil Hills... and the Wright Brothers Monument is pretty cool, too.
