After spending my whole life in Spokane, WA (other than my college stint and a little work in King County) Cindy, my 3 boys and I moved 70 miles south to Pullman. I continue to get asked WHY PULLMAN?
This blog caps a series of 9 blogs (WOW I'm Finally doing this and The Road to Pullman Real Estate).
So when Cindy and I made the decision to leave 17 years of family business at Wendle Ford, we realized we had a clean slate with FAMILY at the center of the slate. We realized we had an opportunity to take what we had and build from it including moving. When considering our options, we discussed Boise, Portland, Seattle, Bend, Missoula (and other MT towns) and Pullman. Pullman came to the top of our list because:
1) We are close to family - my wife's family (Chipman's) are from this wonderful community, Cindy had an amazing childhood because of the incredible opportunities for youth in this community and I have a Mother-In-Law that is pretty special (still lives in Pullman)
2) Community - Spokane is a wonderful community but is a lot larger and is more difficult to find your compass (direction you want to go). Pullman's focus on community is absolutely amazing. Pullmanites are passionate and committed to making the quality of life here better every day! For example:
National Lentil Festival - from the Friday night street fair, to the Taste T Lentil 5K Run, to the Tour de Lentil Bike Ride, to the Lentil Pancake Breakfast, to the Grand Parade (a true Norman Rockwell type parade), to the Lentil Food Court (yes Lentil beer w/ lots of other good lentil eats), to the 3 on 3 tournament, to the Lentil Cookoff and to the Lentil Golf Tournament - this is what COMMUNITY IS ALL ABOUT! Come Check out this year's festival on August 20th and 21st.
Pullman's 4th of July Celeberation - every community has a fireworks show but Pullman has a true community celebration. The day is spent at beautiful Sunnyside Park with kids activities, a killer barbeque, wonderful music and lots and lots of people looking to truly celebrate what Independence Day is all about. To start the 4th off right, you must experience the Johnson Parade where everything flies including the kids throwing water balloons and shooting their biggest baddest squirt guns.
3) The scenery - pictures tell the story
4) Washington State University - Yes, a Husky in Cougville is not all bad.
5) Kid's baseball, soccer, basketball, golf and lots more. Pullman's Park and Rec is top notch for kid's activities from 2 to my age for activities. Pullman Youth baseball - doesn't get better. Watching Ben play baseball on a late spring evening is an amazing and entertaining pastime (socializing with other parents while watching the kids smile). The woman's soccer coach has a soccer clinic that is a sure thing at making your kid a well skilled player. Golf, golf, and more golf - Palouse Ridge, Moscow and year round golf 25 minutes away.
So, do I miss Spokane? Yes, I truly miss my friends, the traditions (kids would have been 4th generation at Lewis and Clark High School) and my family. Spokane is only 75 minutes away and I still get to do business in Spokane, serve on community boards there and visit my family. But, Oh Pullman - I LOVE YOU!
