The College-Temple Historic District in beautiful Downtown Newnan Georgia is one of the town’s most charming and historically significant neighborhoods.
The centerpiece of the community is the Male Academy Museum and the adjacent Temple Avenue Park. The Male Academy opened in 1883 as an all boys private school, and today the building houses a collection of historic artifacts and archives.
The two and a half acre Temple Avenue Park is a passive common green with beautiful blooming shrubs and trees, quiet walkways, a gazebo and a fountain.
This park is also the home of the Coweta Veterans' Memorial Plaza. The plaza was just recently dedicated on Memorial Day, 2009, and pays tribute to all Coweta County citizens that served their country in the armed forces!
The district boasts many antebellum homes. Since Newnan served as a hospital town for both the Federal and Confederate armies, it was spared the torches of William Tecumseh Sherman. The College-Temple Historic district also features Victorian era homes and early Twentieth Century dwellings.
The tree-lined streets have level sidewalks and very conducive for walking tours. In spring, the entire neighborhood is resplendent with blooms of every color and fragrance, and a walk around a block is akin to visiting a botanical garden.
And best of all, the entire community is walking distance from Downtown Newnan, which is also designated on the Nation Register as an historic district. The shops and restaurants of downtown attract diners, visitors and shoppers from across the county and beyond.
Prices for resale homes in the district range from about the $150,000’s for a quaint two bedroom cottage on up to a million dollars for a classic antebellum home that has been updated to twenty-first century standards.
But for those that wish to enjoy the unique lifestyle of classic southern charm and graceful living without sacrificing any modern amenities, the College-Temple Historic District should be placed on the “must-see” list in Newnan Georgia.
It’s definitely worth having a look!
