The North House was built in 1820 and is a restored house museum located in Academy Park, the heart of Historic Downtown Lewisburg, WV.
The North House was built by John Dunn, a local brick mason who also built several other homes in the area during this period. The bricks used in construction of the house were made of red clay dug from the front lawn and fired in a kiln on the premises. The architect of the home is of the Federal period and is reminiscent of the Adams or early Greek Revival style. From the end of the Civil War until the end of the 19th century, the North House was a private residence. It has also been a Tavern, and the Greenbrier College for Women.....now the North House is maintained as an historical house and history museum.
The quaint town of Lewisburg was the site of a Civil War battle on May 23, 1862, when Union forces attempted to sever railroad communications between Virginia and Tennessee. The North House Museum offers Civil War enthusiasts artifacts and documents from that era, including numerous artifacts, and the packsaddle used to train Traveller, General Robert E. Lee’s horse, when he was a colt.
On permanent display are an authentic Conestoga wagon and the first
Rural Free Delivery mail buggy used in the United States. The museum has exemplary, hand carved interior woodwork by noted craftsman Conrad Burgess, as well as locally made 19th century furniture.
