If The Shoe Fits

Pile of shoes at the door.... make sure it's yours!

We had our weekly tour today of new listings that Cambridge Coldwell Banker agents are bringing on. It was a marathon - 24 condos and houses in three towns.

It rained last night so at more than one property we had to remove our shoes or put on booties. It's a practice that I really don't like for safety reasons but that's a topic for another post.

At one of the houses early on the tour there was a mixup of sorts.  An agent went to leave the house and discovered that his shoes were gone.

There was another pair left behind in the pile - same shoes, a few more scuffs, but not *quite* the right size.

But those shoes were his only option so he put them on and started on a quest to find the shoe bandit wearing his shiny shoes.

So, more and more aggravated as the shoes pinched his feet, he searched, head down, for the missing shoes on fellow agents' feet.

About ten properties later the "offender" was located - unaware until that moment that the shoes he wore were not his own.

I found out at lunch that this was not the first shoe mixup on tour.

Another agent recalled the tour day when she discovered when leaving a property that only one of her shoes remained in the pile. There was another lone shoe in the pile so she put it on and drove off wearing mismatched shoes.  As she told the story to her friends in the car the agent behind the wheel belatedly realized that she was also wearing mismatched shoes having taken the wrong shoe from the pile.

So - before you go running out the door - please make sure that the shoes you wear are the shoes you came in with.

That's crazy Liz. Just goes to show how little attention we pay to our feet. (As I'm pretty sure ay chiropodist will tell you!)

I have to say, I can't understand how anyone could take the wrong shoes. I know my shoes are so comfortable on my feet that if I were to accidentally take the wrong ones, I'd know it instantly just by how they felt on my feet! Of course, I'd be looking at them as I put them on so I guess I'd KNOW if had the wrong ones in my hands...at least I HOPE I would!

Oh, that was funny.  I'm like others here who don't understand how someone could possibly not realize that they are putting on someone else's shoes.  I have several Asian friends who insist that everyone take off their shoes in the house.  That is fine, until you walk on the kitchen floor and step on a wet spot.  Then when you leave, your socks are dirty and you have to put your dirty feet and socks into your clean shoes.  I am kind of compulsive about having clean socks and keeping the insides of my shoes clean, so it kind of freaks me out to have to put on my shoes after walking around in someone's house in sock feet.  I have thought about bringing a spare pair of socks to wear, but that might insult my hosts.

Liz, what an excellent real estate story! I knew there was a reason I hated tour, shoe swap.

I'm with Bob, why should my socks clean your dirty kitchen floor?

That is funny.  Something like this happenned with my kids shoes at church, we never got it straightened out, but we did get the bigger pair.

That's true empathy - spending a bit of time experiencing what it feels like walking in someone else's shoes.

Liz, I have never heard of this before, this is so funny.  I giggled the whole time as I read your post.  Don't people put their 2 shoes together side by side away from someone else?  That's what we did, they all lined up neatly, there was no mix up.  It is just too funny.

I've never had this happened but I can see how it could. You should write your post on why you hate taking your shoes off in the first place.

No one ever takes my shoes because they are always the smallest in the pile. Mine are the only feet that would fit in them unless you are about ten years old.

I've seen that happen at parties, like Lottie said above, but never at a Broker Tour! Your story definitely made me smile, but you must finish the story....

What, in fact, did the "offender" say when he was confronted about the mix-up????

Hi Tanya ~ Too funny - somedays you just can't win!

Hi Denise ~ Isn't that the truth? These shoes were almost identical so I can see how it could happen.

Hi Pat and Wayne ~ Until you walk in another's shoes... Ha!

Hi Bob ~ Nothing gets agents more aggravated than no-shoes when the place isn't spotless. We were asked to take off our shoes in a property that still had contractors and painters working in it - talk about unhappy agents!

Hi Lyn ~ It gives you the willies when the place isn't plu-perfect.

Hi Gene ~ That works for kids! Too funny.

Hi Warren ~ That technique is an new one on me! Who knew?!

Hi Rita ~ No - no neatly arranged rows of shoes with this group - it tends to turn into a bit of a jumble.

Hi Joe ~ In a few months you'll have lots of company - plenty of flipflops in Cambridge.

Hi Coleen ~ On rainy days you have to watch your umbrella!

Hi Dagny ~ It made for a funny day - except if your shoes were too tight and weren't yours.

Hi Bev ~ Good thought! It's definitely one of my pet peeves.

Hi Michelle ~ You're absolutely right. I hope, now that he's got his shoes back, that he can chuckle a little.

Hi Jim ~ I guess shoes at either extreme - long or short - are pretty safe.

Hi Judy ~ We only heard one side of the phone conversation and then spotted him driving towards our last stop on his way to retrieve the pair.  I think that it was ok in the end since it was clearly just a complete mixup.

GOOD MORNING LIZ!  I am from Hawaii, and it is custom not to wear shoes in your home or others homes.  So there are lots of wall plaques that read "Mahalo For Removing Your Shoes" at front doors.  And here is one that I hang at my front door that fits your post!  I enjoyed this! -- Gab

Loved your story!I can just see that agent - not looking at the homes you were touring because he was so busy looking for his shoes.

It sounds like for agent tours you need to go back to pre-school tactics - and have mom label your stuff.

Removing shoes wouldn't bother me because I'm a compulsive shoe-taker-offer when I walk into my house or anyone else's. But of course I live where there's not much pavement but plenty of dirt and gravel to track in - and mud, in Spring and Fall.

I've done it for so long that I'm not really comfortable with shoes on in the house. The only problem is that sometimes my feet get really cold!
