Hint: It's in Rome, Italy.

Colosseum Walls and Subfloor

ANSWER:  This is the Roman Colosseum and the area below the arena where the Gladiators fought.  In the picture above is a view of the Colosseum in Rome, looking from the south end towards the north across the arena area.  The area in the foreground is the "floor" of the Colosseum arena where the actions took place.  The Colosseum is interesting for many reasons, but the area below the arena of the Colosseum was a maze of hidden tunnels.  All sorts of stuff went on down there to enable lions and tigers and bad guys (oh my!) to emerge anywhere on the floor and do whatever!  In the picture below is a closeup of the tunnels below the arena floor when looking from the north end towards the south.

Colosseum Subfloor one

At times the entire arena floor of the Colossuem was flooded with water and ships battled each other.  Great imaginations those Romans had, to go along with some pretty spiffy engineering!  In the picture below you can see a slightly different view.  Enjoy.

We were there last year, so I actually recognized it.  I was surprised by the elaborate substructure because I hadn't known that existed.

Hello Jill,

Yes, pretty amazing what they came up with below the arena floor.  All for the sake of entertainment.
