Strawberry Hill in Glencoe, IL

Strawberry Hill, Glencoe, ILStrawberry Hill in Glencoe, Illinois is a subdivision that lies in the very western end of Glencoe - abutting the beautiful forest preserves and Skokie Lagoons.  After the main part of Glencoe was developed, this site, which was called the Skokie Marsh, was drained and built upon.

Strawberry Hill comprises approximately 160 acres and was opened up for development after World War Two.  The driving force behind the architectural style here was Greta Lederer, who designed the newly popular bi- and tri-level homes that so dominate the area.  New homes were advertised for $15,000 at completion in the mid-1950s and had a decidedly contemporary look.

Strawberry Hill is an affordable subdivision - a respite from the multi-million dollar homes found elsewhere in Glencoe and the North Shore.  There are currently eleven homes for sale in Strawberry Hill listed between $535,000 and $1,289,000.

In the past 12 months, there have been 16 closed home sales in Strawberry Hill.  These prices have ranged from $415,000 up to $1,500,000 for a newer home.  Ten of these homes were under $1 million and 5 were under $500,000.Strawberry Hill homes in Glencoe IL

Because of the affordability of this area, many homes have been torn down and there has been an increase in new construction.  However expensive those homes are, though, they are still a better price than in other parts of Glencoe.

Hohlfelder Road runs along the west side of Strawberry Hill.  The road was named after a German pioneer family who came to Glencoe as farmers in 1856.  Johan Chistoff Hohlfelder came to Glencoe to work on a farm and saved his money to purchase 25 acres of land on what is now known as Hohlfelder Road. He later purchased another 70 acres and planted more than 75,000 horseradish plants from the roots he brought from Germany.

Strawberry Hill, GlencoeHohlfelder Road has a bicycle trail as well that runs south to Wilmette and north up to Lake Forest.  Because of the proximity to the forest preserve, Strawberry Hill feels somewhat "rural" although it's just minutes to downtown Glencoe and the expressway to Chicago.  Less than a mile away is the Chicago Botanic Garden on Lake Cook Road.
