New Aviation Charter Academy to open here in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Ok I’m not the greatest fan of flying but to read this article about a school that will be centered around aviation could be a good thing. There are lots of “dreamers” out there who would need a different kind of stimuli than sitting in the classroom. No 2 kids are alike so there are times we have to meet them at “their” needs. We need to exercise the brain that the good Lord gave them. It’s not like the old “reading, writing and arithmetic”. Old school ways would be to say we’re doing it this way and if they don’t like it lump it. It’s called keeping them motivated so they can be productive members of society. There are approximately 60 students starting in the fall of 2010.

Now the article says the “school” will be located at Gerald R Ford International Airport. I can see it now. Heading south on Patterson Ave SE towards the airport and being buzzed by a 16 year old in a Piper Cherokee or something similar. No I’m just kidding. I definitely hope that never happens. The world is changing and we must adapt and change with it. Remember the infancy of the internet. There was radical change when that came about. I remember my children showing me things that I knew nothing about in the mid 90’s. The children of today are the future of tomorrow. If we keep our heads in the sand how much further back could or would we be? Of course there will be naysayers and that’s ok.  There are times we can’t decide on the time of day so should this be any different? I think not. You never know there could be a fighter pilot or an astronaut in the group and then we could say “we knew him/her when they were kids in our community. Only time will tell.

Robert: that could be interesting--a school centered around flying. I wonder what the curriculum would include. Do they plan on liberal arts or business or what? I am from Michigan originally and I know there are always things that the people of that state do to try to revivie the very bad economy...maybe this will be a good thing! I wish them luck; it would be truly a great thing if it produces results that gives Michigan back some of it's earlier pride...I miss the state and it's undeniable beauty! Good and informative post!

Weird but i am from New York. Brooklyn that is. Yes we will see where this goes. Could be a great model for other cities.

Robert...

I would LOVE to learn to fly ... I have plenty of simulator time but very few hours in a real bird!

Robert, Our son joined the Army wanting to become a helicopter pilot.  Being an Intelligence Analyst he found out that you shouldn't get in to something they really need if that is your dream.  It is no longer his dream.  He is now out of the Army and a college student looking at a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  God does work in mysterious ways.

All we've got to do is keep the terrorist out.

Will they be teaching skydiving?  I'd like to do it again, but since I got married the wife has implied threats if I do so:(

I love this!  If there is a future astronaut out there, this may be where it starts.  I find this exciting.

One more thing - I am a big fan of schools that focus on a certain interest.  My daughter attended  the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston and it was the best thing for her.  They managed to challenge their students and keep them interested not only in the performing arts but also the regular classes - math, English, etc.

I think this sounds like a great idea.  I know teachers in some of our great public schools that struggle keeping some kids interested and on track.  These types of schools are great to get them focused on a passion and keep them learning in a new way that can branch directly off to their career if they so choose.
