People are descending on the Tidal Basin, even though peak bloom is still seven days away.

Joanne Aaronson took a stroll around the water with her boyfriend for her birthday.

"Well it's a little early yet but I love the cherry blossoms," she said.

As for her boyfriend, John Zebelean, he says he will becoming back when the blossoms are at their best.

"Its a mob scene. Everybody comes, everybody wants to take a picture, " he said.

Visitors to the popular cherry blossoms are estimated to bring in about $82 million to the D.C.-area.

Metro will have eight car trains in service to handle all the crowds.

Jerry Carr took the day off to enjoy the blossoms before the crowds move in. He's been doing so for the last 16 years.

"Because they are gorgeous. They really are," Carr said.

William Howard Taft was the President when the country received the cherry blossom trees as a  gift from Japan.

Chief horticulturist Robert DeFeo is predicting the peak blooming will be April 1 to April 4. The trees will likely begin blooming this weekend and continue through April 9.

The 2010 National Cherry Blossom Festival is scheduled to run from March 27 to April 11. This year marks the 98th anniversary of Japan's gift of the cherry blossom trees to the nation's capital. The opening ceremony is planned for Saturday at the National Building Museum.
