Time Capsule Entry...Pay Phones

Now,  what a sight I found in Key West this week on Mallory Square, near the Southernmost Point in the U.S. of A.  While it is the favored spot to view sunsets down there, I was more amused staring at this lovely rack of phones, having not seen such a grand display of the "Graham Bell's" in years; and, they were out in public, not in a museum!

I hear folks ever once in a while talking about their High School Time Capsule and what they put in it.  Baseball caps, Low-Crotch Pants, Yearbooks, Recipes, Photos of Classmates, Newspapers, Magazines and the like.  

But how about putting things inside that you know won't be around in 50 or 100 years, like a picture of a rack of Pay Phones.  By then phones will be imbedded in our teeth or certainly our shoulder skin and mobile phones as we know them today will also be dinosaurs!  Imagine a bunch of 20 year-olds in 2110 coming across this picture and wondering what in the heck did anyone do with these things...take temperatures, analyze DNA, play games with 4 competitors, enter the lottery, receive signals from space, or ?  Now be honest, when did you last set your eyes on a rack like these, that are actually taking money or credit cards and making calls, maybe even to Cuba?

Jim, that is classic! I'm sure you didn't see anyone using them either, eh?  I guess if a community wanted to stifle any cell-towers, they could capitalize on the use of pay phones.

I remember my first cell phone.  I should have taken a picture of that!

It does seem strange that pay phones have primarily gone the way of the dodo bird.  There are certain things that I never expected to stay around (anyone else remember computer punch cards?) but pay phones always seemed to me to be something we'd see for a long time.

I can't say when the last time was that I saw payphones anywhere at all! Probably at the Mall lining the wall to the bathrooms.  No one was using those either...
