Gaithersburg Named "Tree City" for 21st Consecutive Year
Posted 3/26/2010

The National Arbor Day Foundation has named Gaithersburg, Maryland a Tree City USA for the twenty first consecutive year.  Sponsored by the Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Tree City Award recognizes Gaithersburg's commitment to the environment and its aggressive approach to preserving and enhancing its urban forest.  The City met four national standards to qualify:  Having a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, maintaining a comprehensive community forestry program, and celebrating Arbor Day with an observance.

"Trees are vital in an urban environment," says Gaithersburg Environmental Specialist Gary Dyson.  "They provide food and shelter for wildlife and numerous benefits for all, connecting us to the living environment and standing as a legacy of the landscape.  Gaithersburg and its residents should be very proud of our collective forestry conservation efforts."

During Green Week, April 16 - 24, Gaithersburg will celebrate Arbor Day at Rosemont Elementary School.  At an assembly on Tuesday, April 20, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources will present Gaithersburg with its Tree City USA Award, and Mayor Sidney Katz and City Council Vice President Cathy Drzyzgula will join students in a tree planting ceremony at the school.
