The new Phoenix Metro light rail train started operation as scheduled in December 2008. Some have said the light rail corridor is as large and up to a mile from the tracks. This means that approximately 44,000 residential parcels are located in the corridor. There are over 22,000 commercial parcels that are also located in the corridor.

It has been noted by local consultants and experts that individuals have been walking up to a mile to catch the light rail train. This was a surprise to many, who thought that people would walk only maybe a quarter-mile to the train station.
