Music on My Website - Should I or Shouldn't I?

I'm in the process of having a website developed.  I am leaning towards having music playing on it.  Something that will go with the image I want to try and portray for my company.  I have 2 questions though.  (1)  Do any of you find music distracting when you are on a site?  (2) How do I go about getting permission to have a particular piece of music playing? I'm assuming that is necessary but I'm not sure.

Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

HI Charlene,

My opinion is no. You cant appeal to everyones taste. I usually mute any website that has music, especially if it plays over and over.

The best advice I recieved:  "If you have music, and I'm at work, the boss might catch me".  I believe that and leave the music off.

Heather - you're right, everyone's taste in music is different.

Greg - true enough, I hear what you're saying.

Thanks to both of you for your input.  I guess I'll have to give this some more thought.

I do not music either as I am normally trying to turn it down or off.

We have music on some of our videos on our information site http://www.myuxbridge.info/ and one of our listing's web site http://www.uxbridgerealestateonline.com/everspringfarm/VideoClips.htm but again only on the videos. our vendor really liked it but I know my husband who does my web sites does not generally like music as he finds it distracting.  Most of our videos with music are on a service provider's site that we link to. They are impossible to load up on our site using our slow wireless with its limited bandwidth.

There is a saying our business about music on websites - Once is cool - Twice is cruel! Because you asked for my opinion, here it is - don't do it! It is nauseating especially when the page reloads and you hear it for the 4th time. In fact, if I land on a website that is playing music, I hit the back button instantly.

Sandra, Kathy & Bobby - Thanks for your feedback.  I really appreciate it.

Well, it looks like the verdict is in - I think I better forget about the music.  Many thanks for everyone's comments!
