Foul Language on ActiveRain

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Higher Ground Real Estate

Being completely aware that activerain is an open forum and we can fully express ourselves with the words and pictures of our choice, is it really necessary to use foul language to prove your point or express yourself?

I'm no longer a blog virgin but just barely. I'm not a prude and I've heard or used most of the words and phrases one would find in the Urban Dictionary at one point or another in my 50+ years...no longer though as my mouth has been largely redeemed.  Although occasionally I will lose control and let one slip or more often think a bit off color...but it never goes to print.

I find it hard to fathom potential customers coming across a blog where expletives were used, just doesn't seem fitting for professionals, whether it's on the court, the field of play or the blogosphere. It's like watching golf on Sunday afternoon at the Masters with all it's grace and prestige and hearing Tiger Woods let fly some choice words...just doesn't fit.

I see the real estate profession as a noble one, where values are high and integrity is paramount.  Call me old fashioned, or just old, but if I come across your blog and the language is off color you're probably not getting my business or my referral.

I totally agree.  I too have heard all the words and they are poor excuses for communication.

Well said Joe! I totally agree, there are plenty of words to use in life, we certainly need to use the best.  Besides what we do on the Internet stays on the Internet.

Forever!

Hi Joe:  Thanks for expressing a thought I've had more than once (unfortunately) while reading posts on AR.  There are so many ways to express thoughts and feelings.  I guess some folks just don't have a decent vocabulary....

Joe:  Anyone who has to use foul language to make a point does not realize that the actual point he is making... is that he has such a poor vocabulary, and such a poor command of the English language... that he feels he NEEDS to curse to get his point across.  It just makes HIM look bad.  Good post... and a point well made !

I can understand a slip of the tongue in a fit of pique, but to let it "slip" in writing when there is more time and thought involved (supposedly). I think it might demonstrate an absence of quality character traits.

Hi Joe - I wrote a post about a year ago asking if ActiveRain should ban profanity, and free speech won out. Even so, I agree completely with you and the other commenters -- there has to be a better way to express ourselves while still emphasizing our point.

Profane language does have it's place.  I don't really see the need for it in a blog, though.  When you are attempting to get your point across amongst professionals then there is really no need for it.  I can understand if your client is using it and you use it as a way to build rapport, but not in a blog...

@ Kevin:  Oh... your client is "using it"... and in an attempt to "build rapport"... you feel it makes sense to try and look as crass and crude as your client is ?  Ahhh... today's real estate professional... uh huh.

Kristal, thanks for the compliment my mentor! I'm certain there are some who wish they could erase from the Internet, all the more reason to take care what you put there.

Kirsten... just couldn't help but express myself as last night I came across another post with unprofessional language and decided to speak my mind.

Karen Anne...Clearly something you are passionate about as well!  The way in which we express ourselves speaks loudly about who we are as professionals.

Pat...what I've noticed in posts appears to be intentional ,not a slip, either added for emphasis or shock value. Some associate language with quality character and others don't.

John...I'm all about free speech and I suspect you are as well. In an open forum, which the Internet is, anything and everything is freely expressed. My opinion is directed at our profession and I do believe there is a better way to express ourselves without the use of profanity. Just leave it out!

Kevin... I'm in agreement with Karen Anne from the standpoint of not using profanity to build rapport. I'd rather build rapport through other avenues than mirroring their use of language. I'd worked with customers that used some pretty graphic language and I think they would see my same use of profanity as being unnatural.  Once again my opinion is that we are to rise above the crowd professionally.

Cherise...not quite sure what to say! You did make me laugh though, I know your sense of humor and I suspect Gordon had some influence on your comment.

Joe and Kevin:  Also... just because a buyer uses profanity... that does not make him stupid.  What if he is smart enough to figure out that the Realtor would probably not F-bomb typcially with customers, and figures out that this silly Realtor is just doing it on purpose to try and artificially "bond" with the client ?  That makes the Realtor end up looking both crude, and obvious.

Karen Anne, of course I agree with you. The use of profanity, or not, isn't an indicator of intelligence.

No need to use that kind of vocabulary.  There are so many ways of making a point across without having to use foul language, but i guess some people just don't have it them :((

I've heard Bono use some "out-of-the-box" language to communicate his message.  Oh my...you can still see the depth of his faith, as well as the tremendous good works that have sprung forth.  Sometimes it's not even the words we use, but rather, the intent of the person's heart.  May we all have the Holy Spirit to speak loudly against legalism, religious conditioning and easy offenses so we can walk in forgiveness and love.  This also applies to how we conduct ourselves professionally.  Cherise
