Bill collectors and friends are having a tough time finding the person they need.

Our landline rings.  Husband answers and they ask for Barbara Duncan.

I pick it up.  "Is this Barbara Duncan?  I am calling to collect an unpaid debt.  I need to tell you that anything you say can be used against you."

I listen to see what else she has to say.

Then I ask her very politely, "Well, what are you calling about?"

She says it is an account with some bank or finance company or credit card company.  I can't remember the exact words.

I have to say to her, "Ma'am, I don't have an account with that company.  You have the wrong Barbara Duncan."

I'm thinking now that folks who don't pay their debts are probably not in the phone book anymore.  They don't have land lines.  They have cell phones and they're going to be harder to find than just looking in the phone book.  I hate that she was having to work on Sunday morning at 8:30 looking for a Barbara Duncan and I hate that she thought her job was as easy as dialing me up and reading my rights to me.

But bill collectors are not the only ones on the prowl for landline numbers.  I had a realtor associate's friend calling looking for her.  The friend had called the landline and it had been disconnected.  She didn't have the cell number for her friend.

So......folks in real estate still need to be found.  Think before disconnecting that landline!!!  For every bill collector that gets the wrong number there may be a hundred people looking for real estate related business.

Nutsy, you called it right with Mr. C.  But you were smart enough to read through his implication that I'm a bad person.

Charles, you are NOT being nice to my godson Nutsy.  Please be king.  He's such a little innocent sweetie.

Steve, with your name the creditors must become exhausted just thinking of having to dial every Steven Smith in the phone book.  I was once called when I had a client in my office and the guy started in accusing me of not paying.  It was embarrassing because I can imagine what the client thought.......hey, she's lying and not paying bills and trying to deny it to that nice bill collector.

Nino, you are just SO young.  Some people in this world still don't have computers and don't know what googling is.  I guess they could just go out and lasso a kid and tell them to do it for them.  LOL

This is deja vu all over again. Didn't you get a call last year--same subject-- from someone looking for the Barbara Duncan on Pecan Street? That Barbara doesn't have a listed number. Zabasearch search lists 33 Barbara Duncan's in Arkansas but many are the same person listed two or more times.

Eight thirty on a Sunday morning? Did the phone ring late last night and nobody was on the the other end? An old bill collector trick to check if anyone is at home, but forbidden by law to talk at that hour.

Lotsa luck I had the same mistaken identity problem several years ago which went on for a couple of years. (That's where I learned the bill collector trick.) Even got a court summons once because a stupid lawyer turned over signed, blank summonses to a slovenly collection agency. They looked up my name in the phone book and fiiled in the form. IDIOT!

Bob, that is one funny comment.  I loved the way it ended with IDIOT!  There appears to be another Barbara Duncan in this county who is wanted by lots of people.  I try to use my S initial for that very reason.  I didn't hear the phone ring last night but I do believe I picked it up yesterday at some time with no one answering.

The collectors ought to know, also, that if I'd been the right Barbara Duncan and they started reading me my rights I'd have hung up the phone immediately. IDIOTS!

Last time I bought a house, at closing, they brought out some thing about a child support judgement against me. The darn fools had the wrong Steve Smith and I was P-sd off to say the least.

Hi Barbara ~ Did they really say "I need to tell you that anything you say can be used against you"? I think they've watched too many episodes of Law and Order.

Landlines vs cell phones. Post card mailings vs internet marketing. Phone calls vs emails. We gotta do it all today because there is too much diversity in the communication mediums that our clients prefer. Wow... what happened to the days when you just picked up the phone and asked the operator to connect you??!!! ***shaking my head***

"Sarah(?), this here's Sheriff Taylor. Would you get me Barney over at the courthouse, please?"   Yes, Ruth, those were simpler times weren't they?

Steve, with a name like yours, I'm not surprised.  When I first got into real estate and sold a house, there might be a judgment against someone with a similar name.  The buyer had to prove that he/she was NOT that person.  I wondered why they didn't make the ones filing the judgment use a social security number so that there was no doubt who it was.  I guess I see now that perhaps they were ahead of the times.  We used to have soc sec #'s on our driver's license!  Now we protect them with a passion.

Liz, they did say those words, almost exactly like that.  I'm sure they had a requirement to meet perhaps so that they couldn't be accused of trickery.

Ruth, you're right.  I wouldn't want to go back but sometimes we rush things along a little fast, don't we.  As long as I can afford the landline, I'll keep it.  But it runs about $95 a month and I can see why you could drop it and save money.

Bob, that was funny.  I love the old Andy and Barney show.

Good Point.  It's like the internet.  Some folks say;"I dont want to be found on the internet".  I say; I hope you can find me easily!

James, you are right.  We do want to be found.  A funny finale to this lack of landlines happened yesterday.  The real estate friend of mine who wasn't findable was visiting with me again.  I mentioned that someone she knew had had a bad accident.  She was appalled and hurried to call the wife and she how he was doing.  Later on I asked what she'd found out.  Her reply, "I couldn't get her.  She doesn't have a landline anymore."

Point made!

Barbara,

Good point. Never thought about that. My personal number is unlisted, but my real estate presence is out there.

Terry, remember when people paid extra to have an "unlisted" phone number?  Do you still do that or did you just do away with the land line?

Barbara - I discontinued my landline during the last major election.  I guess I had received one too many political telemarketing phone calls.  I've heard from a handful of people that they couldn't find our number in the phone book, but most folks figure out they can reach me via my work info.

Lynn, I understand. I get lots of those political calls and charity calls. I'd like for them to put those two on the do-not-call list also. I also understood as I paid my $97 phone bill today and my $77 cell one and my husband's $47 cell phone. Money can be saved.
