If the ceiling and walls could talk in this 120 year old Kitchen ceiling Brevard County, Fl. It would have some interesting stories to tell in deed. The City of Titusville, Florida. Originally called "Sand Point," until Confederate Colonel Henry T. Titus arrived in 1867 with the intention to build a town on land owned by his wife, Mary Hopkins Titus, daughter of a prominent planter from Darien, Georgia. He laid out roads and in 1870 erected The Titus House (This house is one block from this project that I'm working on), a large 1-story hotel next to a Bar (establishment)saloon. He also donated land for 4 churches and a courthouse, the latter an effort to get the town designated as county seat. The community was named "Titusville" in 1873. It would be incorporated as a city in 1887, the year construction began on St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church, listed in 1972 on the National Register of Historic Places. At one point, Titusville would be nicknamed "The City of Churches."
But now back to the remodel at hand in 2010. Upon receiving the call about this project and knowing where this home was located in Historic Titusville, Florida. I was thinking this would be a great opportunity to help preserve this piece of history in the same area I was born and raised. After scheduling a good time to take a look at the project with both of the owners, we had meeting and we all determined that it would be best just to go over the old lathe and plaster ceiling present rather than trying to repair all of these holes. Although it would have been nice to repair the ceiling this old girl has had numerous remodels, repairs over the years. Then after this modification with new can lights, boxes and switches being added and an overdue electrical upgrade. Although it would have been possible I think the outcome in the end will be a lot better by laminating new drywall over the old ceiling. So, after the electricians had their way with the ceiling, adding new can lights in the kitchen area. We overlayed the ceiling with 1/2" drywall, finished the new drywall to a level 4 and installed a very light knockdown texture. We will be going back next week to prime and paint the entire kitchen and formal dining room.
