NAPLES, CA: One Man's Dream of A Taste of Italy in the West Coast

By

Naples, California is a peninsula on the southern most tip of Long Beach.   It was the dream of A.M. Parsons and his son to bring a taste of Italy into southern California. Along with financier Henry Huntngton,A.M. Parsons formed the Naples Company with the hope of developing canals and a grand canal.  This dream started taking shape in 1907.

Today, the canals run for about a mile, comprised of a semicircular canal (Rivo Alto Canal) and a shorter straight canal (Naples Canal).  The streets are named in Italian, further giving it that Italian flavor.

Once inside the canals, you will see beautiful homes and yachts in a peaceful neighborhood setting punctuated by five quaint bridges and tall palm trees. There are several ways to view the canals and streets of Naples. By foot, one can walk the waterfront sidewalks and watch the boats go by.

The waterways provide a lot of entertainment for the residents of the area.  You can be a part of that experience by either renting a kayak, a boat or a canoe.

The other way to enjoy these canals are by taking the world famous gondola rides.

Here are some ways to creatively use the gondola ride:

  • Kiss under every bridge.  With five bridges, there can be a lot of kissing going on.
  • Proposeal of Marriage
  • Get married on a gondola
  • Wedding Anniversary
  • Birthday
  • A group celebration (The biggest gondola can seat 14 people.)

Bring some wine, cheese, your favorite soda.  Check out gondolas at www.gondolagetawayinc.com or www.sunsetgondola.com.

Whether strolling along the canal sidewalk, on a kayak or riding the gondola, Naples is a place you will not easily forget.

I left SoCal in 1975 and the entire time I was there I never once heard of Naples.  My bride and I have friends that live on the Long Beach/Lakewood border... next time we visit, we're going kissing....
